July 31st National Mutt Day
I love dogs. No they aren’t perfect and they do a lot of things we don’t like but they mean well, in most cases. And personally, I like mutts the best. Generally they are smarter than pure breeds. I mean, just like people, the ruling class often turns out some disturbing people. Instead of being beautiful they have to rely on their cunning and intelligence to get attention and make friends.
Call them what you will, half-breed, mixed breed, they don’t really care. They are filled with love and want to share every moment they can with you. And generally speaking, they are happier. They have nothing to prove, they are not showing off, and they learn giving hugs and kisses gets them more than just standing there and being pretty.
Sadly, many puppies are born that never find homes. Maybe they aren’t the most gorgeous creatures on the face of the earth but they can still be your best friend, and so often, they will protect you with their own lives if required.
Just like with people, it’s their soul that wins you over. After all, beauty is only skin deep, whether you are a person, or a dog.
How to celebrate – Love you dog. When adopting a dog, don’t just look at how pretty it is, get to know the dog you are about to let into your family. Take your best friend for a walk remembering, you are walking them… this is their time.

July 30th International Day of Friendship
We all strive to have at least one friend that we can rely on, talk to, and share things with, hopefully offering the same in return to them. Friendship does not see colors, creed, or religion… it sees a human being, or animal, standing in front of us. It is up to us to determine what we do with that.
There is an old saying that you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family. Maybe the place to start making friends is with your family. At least you have something in common with them to start with. Actually, if you think about people in general, we have a lot in common with each other. More in common than the differences that separate us.
The United Nations sponsors International Friendship Day, though it has been celebrated in the US since 1919 indirectly. The first country to officially celebrate the day is Paraguay, on July 30th, 1958. While their efforts often fall short of what might be expected, at least they try.
It takes so little to be a friend to anyone, including animals, and so much to be an enemy. I often wonder if dictators and world leaders had been treated differently as children if they might not be so into themselves that they might even be decent people. We may never know since they spend all their lives not trusting anyone. And a friend does have to be trusted.
It’s time we started looking for friends in life instead of creating enemies. I’m not saying you need to love everybody, that’s not practical, you just need to like them a little.
How to celebrate – Make a friend today. Contact a friend you haven’t talked to in a long time. Figure out what you can do to make yourself a better friend.
July 29th International Tiger Day
There are probably less than 3,000 tigers left in the wild today. We have encroached on their homeland, killed them for sport and trophies and polluted their water and hunting territories all in the name of what? To prove we are the higher species? Well, let’s see a hunter without a gun stand up against a tiger for even five minutes!
I’m not against hunters or hunting but do so with reason and purpose (Just like most animals do) not just because you can. Beautiful creatures like tigers deserve to live just as much as man does, maybe even more, and we are the invaders not them. When was the last time you saw a tiger shopping at a Walmart or racing to get a parking spot before we can?
The tiger is the largest cat in the world and it’s life in the wild has been decimated by 97%. 97%, can you really imagine that!?! Do you really understand what that means!?! Out of every 100 that walked the earth a few years ago only 3 are still alive! Now you might say, “well there are plenty in zoos!” And yes, there are, but that’s like saying that humans in prison represent mankind.
They are loving, caring animals who really want nothing to do with humans other than to be left alone. They do not go to the local malls and hunt for us, why do we go where they live to hunt them? I have to honestly say that I do not understand the sport in that. In sports, someone is going to win and someone lose, who do you think is going to win here?
International Tiger Day was established in 2010 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. (Maybe Donald was there!) I’d love to say they have made a big difference but in all honesty, they really haven’t. Hunters do not go to save the tiger rallies. I think maybe we should turn things around a little and let a pride of tigers into the local gun shows we have. Let them hunt us for a while instead. (And again, I have nothing against guns or hunters at all, just be responsible!)
How to celebrate – Take a tiger to lunch today. (Or be a tiger’s lunch today) Learn what you can do to help stop the slaughter of our precious resources. Start an International Tiger Day chapter in your town.
July 28th System Administrator Appreciation Day
With computers and business machines running most offices these days one of the most valuable people in the entire office is the System Administrator. If not for these people, work would shut down, people would be sent home, and we wouldn’t have somebody that we could feel superior too!
The fact is, we should be looking up to these people who often hide behind the scenes, or under our desks, and save the day by knowing things we don’t even relate too. They know what that mass of wires lead to, what programs can foul our computers, and what to do to fix them.
These are the people we generally call nerds, or geeks, but we should really call them our best friend. When we are at the end of our rope, they calmly step in and normally within minutes have us back up and running again.
Sometimes they use terms we don’t understand, they draw pictures that only aliens can relate to, and they are more than likely the kind of people that go home and play dungeons and dragons. Maybe not the sort we want to hang out with at the local hot spot night club, not that they would go there anyway.
Think of them as the Knight that rides in on their white horse and save us from the monster (or computer). They are our heroes. Saving the day before the day often begins.
How to celebrate – Take your system administrator to lunch. Have a conversation with your system administrator and at least make an attempt to understand what they are saying. Learn a few of the terms your system administrator uses.
July 27th Take Your Pants For A Walk Day
We take our pants for granted. They protect us, keep us warm, and cover up some of our most vulnerable areas so it’s about time we did something for them. Something like, taking them for a walk today.
They do spend a lot of time in the closet, just hanging out without a lot to do. They fight off moths, wrinkles, and rips, always ready to serve in a minutes notice and give us a leg up on the competition when possible.
Sometimes they do have pressing “kneeds” and admittedly they are often “de-creased”, but then you would be too if you had to be stretched and pressed into action daily. They’d love to spend a day at the beach because they rarely are seen there, or go swimming in a pool, and maybe just once wear them in the shower instead of wadding them up in a washing machine when it comes time for them to take a bath.
So grab your pants by the belt loop, give them a good tug and take them for a walk. It’s a great way to patch up your relationship even though they may zip their lips for the abuse you’ve put them through. They will eventually loosen up and follow where ever you lead.
How to celebrate – Take your favorite pants for a walk today. Break out those old bell bottoms since they haven’t seen the light of day in years. Try and patch up your relationship with pants you may have abused, don’t be a “slack-er”.

July 26th Aunt and Uncle’s Day
When we generally think of our aunts and uncles it is with fond thoughts and fun in mind. After all they come from the same stock as our mother or father but don’t have the same discipline issues. So they are more fun, they are more interesting, and in many, many cases, they are a lot weirder!
Aunts are the sisters to our father or mother, most have normal lives like the rest of the family members, but some step away from the norm and live lives much different than we know. If they have children of their own they are more likely to react just as our parents do, but if they do not have children, they may have become airline flight attendants, princesses, mermaids at a theme park, or even political figures.
Whether they are “normal” or not, they are a part of the family and generally love their nieces and nephews, sometimes treating them like their own. They are fun because they don’t have to put up with us 24 hours a day and may have had the opportunities in life few others have.
Uncles, on the other hand, are generally strange. They don’t mean to be, but they are. Naturally they can be normal people but we always wonder if they are some sort of international spy, a wealthy tycoon, or a deep sea diver.
Whether they are spies or mermaids it doesn’t really matter. We are always happy to see them, want them around more, and wish them all the happiness in the world.
How to celebrate – Call your aunts or uncles, or both and wish them a happy Aunt and Uncle’s Day. See how many of your aunts and uncles you can remember (this includes all the cousins!) Relate a story to the rest of your family about the strangest aunt or uncle you have.
July 25th Culinarian’s Day
Today is Culinarian’s Day. If you like to cook, it is you day! Since it has no history and no one claims it as their day, I’ve decided to give you some recipes you might be able to dazzle you friends with.
Century Eggs. These are eggs (Normally duck eggs) that have been stored in Salt, lime and ash for 100 years. (Guess that’s why they are black) Sounds yummy but you may want to have a stomach pump ready to go if you serve them. This delicacy comes to us from China.
Stargazey Pie. Another yummy dish, this time coming to us from England. I guess they call it Stargazey because the fish heads are looking up at the stars. (Actually it was the last name of a fisherman who saved a part of England from starvation by finding sardines for all to eat.) This is probably a healthy meal, it is definitely good for those on a diet because… who could eat it!
Locusts. From Israel we love our locust. Apparently locust are quite a treat. They can be barbecued, baked, broiled or boiled. So the next time you see a field infested with locust don’t think of it as a disaster, think of it as lunch!
My last offering is Casa Marzu. It comes from Italy and is a cheese used as a dip or served with bread. It is Pecorino Sardo, a sheep’s cheese that left out, covered and allowed to be infested with maggots. You harvest the cheese after the maggots have laid their eggs (Larvae) and then served as an appetizer or snack. The larvae is still alive so you might want to check and make sure they don’t come back up on you before you are able to thrown them up.
How to celebrate – Try any of these tasty treats or come up with one of your own. Buy a chef’s hat and at least look the part of a culinary genius! Attend a Culinary class.
