April 30th National Honesty Day

Don’t you wish today could come more than once a year? Well probably not, most of us don’t always want to hear the truth, even if it’s best for us. So why should we expect to hear it from anyone else? Yes, it would be nice but there are probably lots of things we don’t really want to know the truth about.

The justice system is supposed to operate on the premise of truth. Well, this doesn’t always happen. We have to weave our way through all the lies to determine what is true! And when we find out, we so often are not all that better for it.

chick

I mean, if the sky was falling would you really want to know about it? What would you do? Get under something? The chances are that if the sky was falling the last thing you would need to worry about would be that it was! That would simply mean, everything else has gone wrong!

And look at what happened to Abe! What did he get for being honest? Though I do believe that he and M. Hirsh Goldberg may have been the last two honest politicians on the face of the earth. So who is M. Hirsh Goldberg? Well he is the man who created the day back in the 1990’s. He was the press secretary to the Governor of Maryland back then. He believe there should be at least one day a year when everyone was honest.

But really, the question is with ourselves. Are we honest to ourselves? We cannot hide anything from God, or whomever you may believe in. So you might as well be honest there even if you aren’t with yourself. Can you handle the truth!?! Try it out today and see.

How to celebrate – Don’t tell a single lie today. Try and read who is lying to you and who is telling the truth. Go back to bed and don’t worry about it!

7-year old Chris Greicius wanted to be a Police Officer when he grew up. Unfortunately, his leukemia was going to prevent this, but someone made his dream come true, eventually forming into the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 1980.

Today there are 200 wishes granted a year in over 48 countries. Some of us will never get to do the things we hoped we could do, some of us won’t live long enough to see our dreams come true. But with your help, children all over the world might at least get a glimpse of it.

How to celebrate – Give to the Make-A -Wish Foundation. Donate time to Make-A-Wish or another local charity.

April 28th Kiss Your Mate Day

Today might mean something a little different in Australia but for most of us it means, kiss the one you love. Not that you can’t love your mate in Australia but… This is the day that you demonstrate to your loved one how much they mean to you by a simple, or more complex, kiss.

images (1)

It sort of makes me wonder where kissing came from. I sort of think it comes from that old adage, “shut up and kiss me”! But who knows for sure. It has been a way to express you love for someone, the more passionate, the more love I suppose. It sure beats the heck out of telling someone how you feel cause words never seem to be adequate.

I mean, it’s something even most animals do! Naturally, they may be licking the last meal off their mates lips but sharing is good! We humans have tasty lip gloss, use various mouthwashes and use other means in order that our mate find our offering more appealing. And I guess that’s important. Ever kiss someone who has just eaten an onion or garlic!

And when we are young we find kissing yuckie! I think it’s because we don’t really know what it means, or maybe we do… but either way, as we mature we look for as many kisses as we can. And really, even though today is the day we celebrate it you should kiss your mate as often as you get the opportunity.

is-kissing-important-to-a-relationship

A kiss offers up romance and the better the kiss, the more romance. I am sure we all envision our kisses being some magic potion that sends our loved one into a world of fantasy and passion. Probably not true but we can dream! “You must remember this, a kiss is just a kiss, the fundamental things apply, as time goes by.”

How to celebrate – Kiss your mate, even if you are in Australia. Enter a kissing contest. Serve at the kissing booth at a carnival.

April 27th Babe Ruth Day

“The Bambino” is probably the best known baseball players in history. His 60 home runs in a season held up for decades as what seemed to be a unattainable feat and apparently it took the use of steroids to beat any way. (Not saying that the Babe didn’t use anything either) He became  legend and today is the day we celebrate his success.

It’s odd when you look at the man who made the Yankees who they are. Known as, “The House Ruth Built” the stadium, the team and the league all benefited from what Ruth was able to accomplish. But in the end, even the Yankees traded him away.

1933-Goudey-Babe-Ruth-149-243x300

Nearly every kid admired him. Today he would have made a fortune in endorsements, his home run for the kid in the hospital are things people will probably speak of into the next century. He retired on April 27th, 1947 after being diagnosed with throat cancer. He faded from the game only to become a legend.

ruth card

Whether you like the game of baseball or not, you have to admire what the man did. Probably not everything was above board or would met with the expectations one sets on heroes but that’s okay… since we are all flawed, it makes our heroes a little more human.

And so the man passed away, but his legend will live on forever. That would be considered a success in nearly everyone’s book.

How to celebrate – Read about Babe Ruth. Go to the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Have a baseball party themed around Babe Ruth.

April 26th National Pretzel Day

Today is a day we can really sink our teeth into. It’s National Pretzel Day, hurrah! Well, hurrah for those of us who like pretzels. Hard or soft, with or without mustard, cheese or any topping  you prefer. They are pretty good without any topping either.

FE24FDPRETZEL_CM10839-1080x715

Pretzels first came on the scene apparently in Southern France around 610 AD. Monks were trying to make what would look like children’s hands praying by baking thin strips of dough twisted into the shape of praying hands. I’m not sure they got it but what they did start was probably the world’s first snack treat!

Since then, pretzels seem to appear in nearly any shape to can imagine, even the boring straight thin kind. (They are still pretty good but not as much fun.) They go great with beer or soda, or nearly any beverage of your choice.  Better yet, when served plain, they aren’t all that fattening either!

Now if you have a pretzel factory, or place or store or whatever you call it, they often give away free pretzels today to celebrate. Or if you prefer, you can even make your own by using this recipe.

How to celebrate – Have a pretzel! Go to a baseball game and…. have a pretzel! Have a pretzel party with different shapes and dips or toppings.

April 25th National East Meets West Day

There has always been a difference in culture between the East and the West. Look at Japan and Canada, Russia and America, Indian and Mexico. It doesn’t mean one is better than the other or that one is right and one is wrong, it just means… well… there is the east and there is the west!

JESS3_Mindjet_BtwMnd_WCvEC_FNL

If you go far enough east you will eventually end up in the west and vise-versa. There are football games and other sporting events that tries to prove which is better but in the end, it really doesn’t matter. Take a football game many of the players that play for a western team came from the east, and many playing in the east came from the west.

During World War 2 a big drive was for the Americans to meet up with the Russian to end the war. the Russians were considered the Eastern troops, the Americans the Western. In fact when the two sides decided they could not get along they separated Germany into East Germany and West Germany.

Even in America the life styles were different. The above photo is of an 1800’s street in Philadelphia. Well established by the mid 1800’s, Philadelphia became a point of culture and refinement. It had been around longer, gone through more was a permanent fixture.

Old West Town.jpg-13385

An old west town of the same era was a little cruder and contained a not so refined culture and citizens. The buildings were smaller and less secure because frankly, the owners didn’t know if they were going to stay there or not. One was not better than the other, they just served different needs and purposes.

How to celebrate – Try and determine where east meets west where you live. If you live in the East take a trip West. If you live in the West take a trip East. (Note what difference you see, and don;t see, on your trip)

April 24th National Pigs In A Blanket Day

This is a tasty treat day! There’s nothing just nothing like a little pork in a biscuit. Of course, this depends on your religion but if it is not against your beliefs it’s something you can really sink your teeth into!

images (1)

No one is exactly sure who first came up with the pig in the blanket, it has probably been around for centuries and more than likely came into existence by mistake… like most things do. Sort of like the Earl of Sandwich accidentally created the sandwich while playing poker! Probably some Knight asked for a biscuit and a sausage and found he had to go slay some dragon, so he put the sausage in the biscuit and off he went. (Or she if you like that better.)

Pigs In A Blanket

And then there are those who would like to spoil today by reminding us that pigs are cute animals and we shouldn’t eat them. However it should be remembered that a pig will eat anything! There are stories of people in the past that put their murder victims in a pen with pigs and they were never seen again.

Pigs in a Blanket Bugs and Bunnies Blog

And I have never actually seen a real pig in a blanket. I suppose it could happen, if you keep a pig as a pet inside. But in the wild I do not see pigs carrying around blankets with them. And what if a pig threw a party? What would they serve? Finger sandwiches? It’s all in your perception.

6663304_orig

And I perceive pigs in a blanket to be very tasty and fun to eat! It is the perfect party food since it rarely requires a lot of clean up and people can carry them around with them while socializing.

How to celebrate – Have some pigs in a blanket for supper tonight! Invent your own “something” in a blanket if you don’t eat pork. Get a pet pig.

April 23rd Lost Dog Awareness Day

April23rd Lost Dog Awareness Day.

For most of us, a dog is like having another child… one that actually listens to us! My best friend is a dog. She listens to me, never judges me and normally wants to be with me. The few times she has gone missing terrify me. I wonder if I will ever see her again, if she’s been hurt… in short, everything you would be fearful with a missing child.

LDOA, Lost Dogs of America, founded the cause in 2011 and created the day in 2013.
