Everyone knows I love dogs. You can just look in their eyes and see the love there. They instantly become your best friend in the whole world and ask so little in return. A little food, water and love buys a lifetime friendship that will go with you anywhere you will allow it to go with you.

I think some of the mutts in the world are the most precious. They have nothing to prove, won’t win any ribbons and may get a bit goofy from time to time but they are always there. I wish they could live longer because the only bad thing about having a dog is losing them.

There is nothing wrong with a pure-breed. They are cool but a mutt just has that something extra. They aren’t perfect, they make mistakes and sometimes even do something bad but it is never intended. They really do only want to make you happy.

They laughs, they smile and they even cry… just like us humans. They play fetch, they cuddle and they are there for you when you need them. Please be there for them when they need you. Dogs are one of the best things in life, mutt or pure-breed. Love them and they are guaranteed to love you back.

How to celebrate – Consider adopting a homeless dog. Treat your dog like the friend they are. Make today all about your dog, I’ll bet you get more out of it than they do.

July 30th National Father-In-Law Day

Today we celebrate that long lost hero, our father-in-law. We hear a lot about our mother-in-law, of course our mothers and our fathers… but not much about our father -in-law. That guy that generally sits in the corner keeping to himself and trying desperately not to get in the way.

I don’t know about you but I really appreciate my father-in-law.  He is always there to be supportive but never forces his will, or thoughts, on me. That’s really cool. He is more like a friend than a father-in-law. In my case, like a best friend.

Now I have to admit my situation is a little unusual. My father-in-law is younger than me. A little weird, huh? Well, it works out well. (My wife is 19 years younger than me) That said, I still notice other father-in-laws being really cool people anyway. I got really lucky, but most seem to live and let live.

Now, in thinking of Father-In-Laws I got wondering about Joseph and Mary. Yes, they had their own parents and in-laws… but Jesus’ Father is God. So if anyone had married Jesus, not that it would have ever happened, that would have made God someone’s Father-In-Law. Wow.

How to celebrate – Appreciate your father-in-law. Surprise him by throwing him a party! Make a list of all the help he has given you without expecting a thing in return.

July 29th International Tiger Day

There are probably only 3,000 tigers left in the world… that includes those captive in zoos. This majestic animal has been hunted, it’s habitat destroyed and, of course, the natural course of life. The day was created at the 2010 International Tiger Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia.

It’s a shame that man feels so compelled to destroy what comes naturally in the world. If man was not able to arm himself with guns the tiger would probably remain the King of the World. There are few animals that can tangle with a tiger and survive. But the tiger rarely kills just for the sport of it, unlike man.

And by building on the land the animal lives on, there are few places left for it to go. It does not own land. It has to be able to hunt and live in an environment it can function in. The only safe place for the tiger to live anymore is in a zoo, maybe someday the only safe place for man will be in jail cells as well.

Now I know many don’t care. They only live for what they want when they want it… but boy will they fight back if they can;t have it. Same for the tiger. Why we feel superior to the creatures of the world we should learn the planet does not just exist for humans.

So help those around you to understand that they aren’t more important than the other creatures of the world. Live and let live. The majestic tiger deserves a place in this world just like the rest of us.

How to celebrate – Study the plight of the tiger. Visit a zoo to see tigers. Support those who want to save the tiger.

July 28th National Day of the Cowboy

Yee-haw, today is the National Day of the Cowboy! It’s created by the National Day of the Cowboy group in 2005. Who doesn’t like a cowboy? Rough, rugged and always polite.  It’s a really hard job but someone’s got to do it.

Cowboys do live by a code. They are to be honest and have courage, Take pride in what they do, be curious about life, finish what one starts, keep any promise made, be tough but fair, maintain clean thoughts and deeds, always be tolerant, be a steward of the land and animals and stand up for what you believe in.

And, of course, the unspoken rule made by the ladies… be a beef-cake. For most cowboys this isn’t too hard because the work they do makes them stay fit. They may not always be real clean and smell good, but looking good is half the battle!

Cowboys have always been around, in one form or another. There job was to bring the animals in their charge to where they are needed. Along the line they had weather, other animals and people they had to protect the herd from. With many learning the art of horseback riding during the Civil War, they went west to ply their trade, settling a wild land as they did.

So go ahead, and make their day by celebrating their heritage with them. They have never been perfect, but they never tried to be. They just did the best they could with what they had.

July 27th Take Your Pants For A Walk Day

Just like your dog, your pants really need the exercise so they should be taken for a walk. Whether you are in them or not is an entirely different question. It seems like in fashion today it really doesn’t matter all that much whether you wear them or not, particularly if they are down around your knees. (How can that be comfortable?)

Now frankly, it’s a little hard to take your pants for a walk if you are not in them. So it leads to more like Drag Your Pants Around Day. Let’s hope it’s not raining! But if you don’t like walking your pants then maybe it is a drag!

And what if you only have one pair of pants? Then what do you do? And why are they called a pair of pants when there is only one pant there? Life must be very confusing for pants. Keep that in mind when you look at them today hanging in your closet. See how lonely they look, particularly during the summer!

Make sure, however, that if you are walking your pants you only take them to appropriately marked areas. Believe it or not, a nudist colony is a perfect place to take your pants since otherwise they will have nothing to do all day but hang out.

Now don’t make today something about you. It’s all about your pants! There will be other days you can walk your dress or coat. And whatever you do, don’t get caught with your pants down! They would be really embarrassed.

How to celebrate – Take your pants for a walk. Wearing them is optional. Make sure to wash them when you get back home.

July 26th All Or Nothing Day

Today is the day to go for it! To reach beyond those limitations you place on yourself, and the world puts in your way. It could be something big, or something small… it doesn;t matter, it’s All Or Nothing Day.

How about running for office? Sure, maybe you are qualified or know nothing about any of the issues, maybe you don’t even know where you live but today… that’s doesn’t matter.  All that matters is that you try for it! And frankly, you probably can’t do much worse than those already in office.

Or maybe you want to win a beauty pageant! It no longer matters if you are pretty or physically fit, all that matters is that you think you are beautiful in your own head. Why strive to be anything beyond the norm, that’s not what true beauty is all about… it’s about your soul.

Or maybe you want to be rich! I know I do. The reality is none of us is going to get there but maybe you can win at monopoly and pretend! After all, what would you really do with that stack of gold?

Or maybe your idea of going for it is going for nothing at all! There is nothing wrong with that. After all, if you start with nothing it’s a whole lot easier to go for something!

How to celebrate – Try doing something you have always wanted to do but have never tried to do. Reach for the stars! (You may need a ladder)  Be happy with who you are and what you have.

July 25th Culinarian’s Day

According to the dictionary, there is nothing such as a Culinarian, I beg to differ. What is a Culinarist but a Culinarian?  We are speaking about someone here that is a step above a cook. There’s some food for thought!

There is an art to preparing and plating a dish. That often separates a cook from a Culinarian. A cook gives you a hamburger, a Culinarian serves you a hamburger with a tomato.

Seriously though, true chefs spend years learning their craft. Maybe some of their dishes are beyond your palate but you have to appreciate what they do. They separate those who eat escargot from those who eat snails.

Food is so much of what we live for that it has to become an art. After all, art mimics life! Or is that the other way around? Either way, today we celebrate the Culinarian’s among us. Those who looked at food and said, “I can make something else out of that!”

So many of these bizarre holidays have something to do with food. They are a  Culinarian’s delight. The true question here is… can you really trust a skinny Culinarian?

July 24th National Cousins Day

Today is the day where you can celebrate a good friend and a relative at the same time! It’s National Cousins Day! I remember every summer my cousins coming to visit on our farm in Illinois. It was always the best time of year. Yes, I was the youngest and they did some awful things to me but I still had fun.

They made me eat dog food, watch scary movies alone and then jump out at me and play hide and seeks where I was the only one they never tried to find… but still, I loved them and always had fun.

And normally, at some point in the summer, we would have a family reunion where I would meet cousins I didn’t even know I had! There was always great food, company and fun to be had.

But over the years, we lost contact with each other. It has been more than thirty years since I’ve seen them, twenty years since I’ve heard from them and probably ten years since I thought of them until today.

Don’t let that happen to you. They are a part of your family and therefore, a part of your life. My Aunt and Uncle have long since past away but my cousins, so far as I know, are still alive. I miss them and I do not even know how to find them.

How to celebrate – Contact your cousins. Have a family reunion. Keep a family tree.

July 23rd National Vanilla Ice Cream Day

Yes, it may be consider the Plain Jane of the ice cream of family but it deserves so much more credit. I mean, doesn’t nearly all ice cream start out as vanilla ice cream before the flavoring are added in?

And, most people find vanilla ice cream the most refreshing… even if they like another flavor better. And if not for vanilla ice cream, the vanilla bean wouldn’t be nearly as useful! It is probably the first ice cream ever made, though some would argue lemon is the first. Even if that is the case, vanilla quickly over took lemon in becoming a favorite.

It makes the perfect partner for cake and pie, for pouring syrups over or adding fruit to. It begins most milk shakes, even the chocolate ones. It can be put in coffee, punch or just served plain. And when other ice cream gets too sweet… vanilla still comes through.

Then there is soft serve vanilla ice cream. It’s wonderful! And even if you like a little chocolate, you can make it a vanilla/chocolate swirl! And when you go to a fast food place the always ask if you want a vanilla, chocolate or strawberry shake. See, vanilla comes first!

So this summer, as the days heat up and a bowl of ice cream sounds like a great way to cool down, think vanilla first. After-all you can always add chocolate or strawberry, or any flavor you want to it and only make the original, that much better!
