September 30th National Mud Pack Day

Mud… well, it’s always been there so humans had to find uses for it. It has always been good for minor skin issues, like bee stings and some rashes. (It also causes some rashes) It has been used to build walls since when it dries, it’s pretty strong. It’s used in combat to make soldiers invisible to the enemy and, of course, it’s something fun for kids to play in. However, someone figured out that it was really good to put all over your face to refresh your skin and open your pores. My guess is, some soldier came away from battle covered in mud and when he washed it off he must have remarked how beautiful he felt. From there, it got passed on to civilians who agreed once they tried it. Now it is a regular facial component. Naturally you need to use clean mud.

How to celebrate – Try a mud pack facial. Go outside and play in the mud. Make some mud pies!

September 29th Confucius Day

Born on Oct. 18th, 551 B.C. Confucius was probably the the biggest talker in history. A lot of his ideas are remembered and serve us well even today. Most of his “Sayings” were humorous, some thoughtful, and nearly all of them applied to times well beyond those he lived in. He was a great thinker, a man of deep thoughts, and perhaps a stand-up comedian who sat down. We may never know if he took himself seriously or not, but since his time, many others have. It’s odd to think that sound thinking is always thought of as brilliance… what does that say about the rest of us? Today has been celebrated for thousands of years, I wonder if he knew what he was saying would affect so many people?

How to celebrate – Get a book of Confucius sayings. Visit China. Come up with your own book of sayings that can be attributed to you.

Sept. 28th International Rabbit Day

Some call this Bunny day but either way it always falls on the last Saturday in September. Unless you have a garden, it’s pretty hard not to love rabbits.  They are soft and cuddly, cute to watch and they always leave a trail for you to follow to find them. Now you might think Bunny Day would fall closer to Easter, but we are talking about real rabbits here, not the man-made kind. If you get one for a pet be careful, they do bite, but they really don’t mean it.

How to celebrate – Adopt a pet rabbit. Search for rabbits in the woods. Dress up like a bunny and see if anyone notices. Visit peacebunnyisland.org to learn more about this teen’s awesome work rescuing rabbits.

September 28th Ghost Hunting Day

Sept. 28th National Ghost Hunting Day

You might think this would fall better in October when the spirits are a little more active but in all honesty if there are spirits around, they are always there. This day always falls on the last Saturday of September, getting us ready for Halloween. Scarefest starts with a shot-gun blast in Lexington, Kentucky sometime after dark. Lets hope that the shot-gun blast doesn’t add to the ghosts we are hunting. Make sure you want to find what you are looking for if you find it because in the case of a ghost, it might be a little hard to get rid of.

How to celebrate – Visit Lexington, Kentucky. Look for good ghost locations near you. Learn about the ghosts near your home, make sure you want to seek them out.

September 27th Native American Day

There is a reason they call them Native Americans, cause they were the first ones here! There are many wonderful things about the Native Americans and we should honor them as they lived their lives with honor. It should be remembered that the Native Americans kept moving out of the settlers way until there wasn’t any place left to go. It was then that they stood up for their rights but by then, it was too late.

How to celebrate – See how many native American tribes you can name. Visit a tribe now where they can share their customs and foods with you. Read about the real Natives of America.

September 26th Johnny Appleseed Day

September Holidays

John Chapman, alias Johnny Appleseed, was born on September 26th, 1774. He was reported to be a very religious man who loved animals and set out from New York to help plant apple orchards all across America. Records reveal he probably didn’t make it past Ohio back then, but that was all across the America he knew of. Other reports say he was not a very nice man, who helped plant these orchards and then later came back to claim them as his own costing the actual owners thousands of dollars. I have no idea which is true but it doesn’t really matter, today is his birthday and either way he has become a legend in our folklore.

How to celebrate – Have an apple in honor of John Chapman. Visit an apple orchard. Make an apple pie!

September 25th National Comic Book Day

September Holidays

When I was younger I loved my comic books. Of course back then they were a little different than they are now. Okay, they were a lot different. We had Superman and Batman but they weren’t as popular as Classics Illustrated which were comic books but were historical in nature. They dealt with real people doing real things. I am not sure when all our kid’s heroes started becoming something they could never be or achieve, but they have. While comic books are still fun they are no longer educational and in some cases maintain adult content. So maybe comic books aren’t as big with kids anymore, maybe they are still being sold to us relics that never totally grew up.

How to celebrate – Read a comic book. See if you can find any of the old comic books. Start a comic book collection (it will be costly). Make your own comic book.

September 24th National Cherries Jubilee Day

September Holidays

Well, if you are going to have a dessert, this is a good one to have! You get the sweetness of ripe cherries, the bite of cognac or brandy, and the balance of vanilla ice cream all to savor. And… You can set it on fire! Presentation is half of the enjoyment! Though kids love this, it’s meant for adults. I found no real history on cherries jubilee, I would bet it’s a French thing. Anyway, it’s a fun dessert and works either during the heat of summer or the cold of winter.

How to celebrate – Have some cherries jubilee! Try another fruit instead of cherries – raspberry jubilee, kiwi jubilee, blueberry jubilee. Forget the cherries and vanilla ice cream and just go for the cognac or brandy!
