June 29th Hug Holiday Day

Remember the hug? That action where you grab someone else and hold them tight, it was so soothing, so calming, so rewarding. Those were the days! Well, I write these blogs in advance of the day so hopefully by the time this comes out we will be allowed to hug again. If not, then maybe soon. Do you find yourself hugging your dog or cat more? How about that Teddy Bear? People do need to hug, to get that reassurance that someone cares. It just seems to culminate all those emotions that come together at once. In joy or sorrow, it cements relationships and builds new ones. If you are allowed, give someone a little tighter squeeze… they may have to make it “hold” them for a while.

How to celebrate – If allowed, hug someone. Learn to give “air” hugs. Buy a really big teddy bear.

June 30th Meteor Day

June 30th Meteor Day

Duck! Somewhere between 20 to 25 million meteors hit the earth’s atmosphere every day! Of course, most burn up before they actually hit the earth’s surface but some get through letting us use our imagination of where they came from and how they got here. Most come from stars and other matter in space exploding and shooting across the sky. If we are lucky we can see one as it burns up in the atmosphere, if we are not lucky, one falls on our head! That gives a whole new meaning to “Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket”!

How to celebrate – Visit one of the sites where a meteor has landed on Earth. Watch the sky at night for falling meteors. Get a steel umbrella.

June 29th International Mud Day

Wow, it’s time to get down and dirty! It’s International Mud Day, founded originally to give assistance to 58 children in Nepal. Now it belongs to the world (but it is still used to help children)!

It’s hard to imagine anything more tempting than jumping into a field covered in mud. Slipping and sliding, splashing and forgetting all the stuff your mom ever tried to teach you!

The World Forum for Mud Day was founded in 2009 by Australian Gillian McAuliffe and Nepal’s Beshnu Bhatti. Their intent was doing something fun, something nearly everyone can do and just letting go for a day.

And it’s fun for kids of all ages. No make-up required, forget finding just the right outfit, you don’t have to remember what fork to use, or about putting your elbows on the table (if you did they would probably slip off anyway!). It’s a day when everyone is equal, no one outshines another and the only true competition is trying to get on your feet, or stay on your feet.

Male or female, young or old, rich or poor.. we all look alike in the mud.

How to celebrate – Find a mud hole and dive in! Start your own International Mud Day charity in your area. Treat yourself to a mud pie.

June 28th Paul Bunyan Day

Paul Bunyan was created during the Papineau rebellion in 1837 in Canada. He is a French Canadian creation though most people in the Untied States feel he is a part of their history as well. Accompanied by “Babe” he roamed North America forming the Great Lakes and provided leadership for the logging industry which suffered from overwork and unsafe conditions. Louis Papineau was a political figure in Canada at the time and is now a political party in Canada. With someone like Paul Bunyan, and Babe, on your side it was hard to ignore the demands loggers required to make their lives better.

How to celebrate – Read the stories about Paul Bunyan. Become a logger. Visit the Great Lakes.

June 27th National Onion Day

NOA, the National Onion Association, was formed on June 27th, 1913. Why one felt there needed to be a National Onion Association still is a bit confusing but then, why not instantly follows. The onion belongs to the Allium family which includes garlic, shallots, leeks and chives as well as onions. As with most vegetables it is healthy and tasty, though there are a lot of people who are allergic to them. When one is allergic to one member of the Allium family they are generally allergic to all of the family though perhaps to a lesser degree.

How to celebrate – Have some onion today. You may want to buy some breath mints if you do have onions. Grow onions in your garden.

June 26th Take Your Dog To Work Day

June 26th Take Your Dog To Work Day

Since 1999, people have been celebrating today by taking their best friend to work with them. It was created by Pet Sitters International probably because they need a day off! Your dog loves you and wants to be where ever you are. They will do whatever you want them to do, hopefully, as long as they get the chance to be with you. They don’t really ask for too much more. So take your dog to work today with you. I guarantee your day will be better.

How to celebrate – Buy your dog a suit or dress so they are properly clothed when you go into work. Train your dog to do things for you at work. Make sure you take a water bowl with you.

June 25th Log Cabin Day

It’s only 6 months until Christmas! Not that this fact has anything to do with log cabins but I thought you might like to know. Log Cabins have been a part of our history since our history began. People have to have a place to live and when they first came to the US the main resource to build homes out of was, wood. Instead of cutting the wood into planks, they just used the entire tree! It was logical, the settlers were primarily in the northern states and a home owners was more concerned with keeping warm than enjoying a cool breeze. Today was created by “The Log Cabin Society”, formed by Virginia Handy, and the “Bad Axe Historical Society” on June 25th, 1986.

How to celebrate – Build your own log cabin. Vacation in a log cabin. Buy some Lincoln Logs and make a miniature log cabin of your own.

June 24th World UFO Day

June 24th World UFO Day

Well, we all know what a UFO is, an unidentified flying object. What apparently is not known is what day to celebrate the subject matter. Some people place it on today when Aviator Kenneth Arnold first reported seeing a UFO which got out to the public and started a whole new craze. Others think today should be on July 2nd, the day a UFO crashed at Roswell in 1947. It really is your choice since no one knows whether UFO’s exist or not. The idea of today is really all about you investigating UFOs and determining whether you think they are real or not.

How to celebrate – Read about UFOs sightings. Visit Roswell. Spend tonight looking for UFOs.

June 24th Swim A Lap Day

June 24th Swim A Lap Day

Its summer, what’s more natural than jumping in the pool and swimming a few laps! Of course, your rewards may depend on whether you have a real pool or a kiddie pool and if your pool is the ocean, good luck with that lap. Swimming is good for you, it tones muscles and actually helps you lose weight while not sweating. If you are sweating you need to turn down the heater in your pool. It is great exercise, fun to do and is a great reason to throw a party. The more laps you can do the better but remember it’s not about the speed unless you are practicing for the Olympics.

How to celebrate – Get in the pool! If you don’t have a pool, build one. At last resort, use your bathtub.

June 23rd National Pink Day

June 23rd National Pink Day

For some reason, not officially recognized, women love the color pink. I am sure it has something to do with being soothing and yet still bright and cheerful. Men generally think a little less of it, I don’t think so much for the actual color but because it shows dirt so easily. Today, whether you are a man or a woman, is the day to wear pink and show your support for the color. It’s halfway between red, a color of deep passion, and white, a color of innocence. I expected to find some great cause for today and was surprised I did not find one. Pink is an anti-bullying color but has it’s own day so I guess today we just celebrate the color pink, why not? We also celebrate Pink Flamingo Day.

How to celebrate – Wear pink. Dye your hair pink. Wash your whites with reds and get an entire new pink wardrobe.
