August 15th National Honey Bee Awareness Day

We all know bees are hard workers but I didn’t realize just how hard they do work. The average bee will cover 55,000 miles to produce just one pound of honey. Of course this is in a larger group because the common honey bee will create just 1/2 teaspoon of honey in their entire lifetime. So the next time you use some honey for yourself, just take a moment to think of all the work that went into that. Today was created by Thomas J. Vislsek, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture on August 11, 2009, the 3rd Saturday of August.

How to celebrate – Have some honey today. Visit a bee hive. Start collecting your own honey… very carefully!
