December 31st New Years Eve

Thank God 2020 will be over after today! We have no idea of 2021 will be any better but it can’t be a whole lot worse! Make your New Years Resolution before midnight and see if you can keep it for even 24 hours. Average length of kept resolution is a week. This has to be a better year and we can make sure it is better by going into it with a positive attitude. Try to calm yourself with the fireworks… they scare all our pets and remember how good they have been to use all year. Lets close out 2020 and start all over with 2021!

How to celebrate – Bring in the New Year with someone you love. Make a list of your New Year resolutions. Take it easy on the booze and fireworks.

December 30th Bacon Day

Also known as International Bacon Day. Well, who doesn’t know what bacon is? Today is claimed by two different groups, the residents of Bradford, Ma in 2000 and then some grad students in Boulder, Colorado in 2004. The grad students were probably stoned and didn’t know the day had already been created. Doesn’t matter either way, bacon is bacon and it should be enjoyed by all. (There is vegan bacon as well) Most people love this day, pigs… not so much.

How to celebrate – Enjoy some bacon. See how many bacon recipes you can find. Have bacon at every meal.

December 29th Pepper Pot Day

Most people do not eat Pepper Pot. Most people do not know what Pepper Pot is. If you were a Continental Soldier at Valley Forge you would know what it is, you would also be really, really old. Food was hard to find at Valley Forge and morale was going down so Washington asked his chef to come up with something that might cheer the men up. The chef made a soup out of tripe (Stomach lining) and peppercorns and the troops loved it. Maybe a little spicy, but when you are cold that’s a good thing. The soup was first served December 29th, 1777.

How to celebrate – Have some Pepper Pot Soup. (You don’t have to use tripe) Visit Valley Forge. Read about life at Valley Forge.

December 28th Card Playing Day

Oh, the weather outside is frightful but playing cards inside is delightful… so if it’s snowing, break out the cards. Most of us know at least one card game we can play, a lot of us know a bunch of card games we can play and a few of us know too many card games we can play. Cards do help us pass time and they help us learn to concentrate and focus. It’s also a great time to talk 9over things that have happened and learn about family members and friends. The act of playing cards generally involves other people, though it doesn’t have to so it can equally be a time to think through things and on your mind.

How to celebrate – Get some friends together and play cards. List as many card games as you can without looking them up. If you are really bored, try stacking cards.

December 27th Make Cut Out Snowflakes Day

Well if you live in a warmer climate then this day may be very important to you, its Make Cut Out Snowflakes Day. If you are in a region where it snows a lot you may want to ignore today, you probably have a lot of snow already. But if you need to create that look of snow this could be an important day for you. Naturally I do not propose you put these snowflakes in your yard, it doesn’t really look like snow as it resembles more of a garbage dump site than a field covered in snow.

How to celebrate – Make some paper snowflakes. Go outside and play in the snow if you have any. Go back to bed and wait for winter to end.

December 26th Boxing Day

Today has been around since the Middle Ages in Europe and it’s probably not what you are thinking it is. Since on Christmas we celebrate by giving gifts to our family and friends on Boxing Day we are to give to those who help us in the community. It s known as the Feast of Saint Stephen and is celebrated by placing money in the Alms Box in the Narthex of most churches, hence “Boxing Day”. We should always remember those who remember us everyday by doing the things we have to have done… like picking up the trash, keeping our electric functioning and anything else we rely of every day.

How to celebrate – Give to others. Remember those who remember you. Celebrate life.

December 25th Christmas Day

In case you woke up this morning brain dead, it’s Christmas Day! The day celebrated by Christians for the birth of Jesus Christ. Of course we really don’t know what day Christ was born but December 25th seems as good as any day. There are so many tradition we celebrate today thought the religious aspect seems to lose compared to the social norms. That’s sort of sad when we forget the reason we are celebrating. Well, enjoy your Christmas, celebrate for whatever reason you choose but remember this is the day the most important human ever was born.

How to celebrate – I don’t think you really need me to tell you how to celebrate your day but try to remember the reason for the season.

December 24th National Egg Nog Day

How nice that National Egg Nog Day falls on Christmas Eve. That drink that is so creamy and filled with flavor even before you add your rum, vodka or cognac. Now I know there are people out there that think Egg Nog is too thick but how many other drinks can you name that you can drink and eat at the same time! It is so good that they have made it into coffee creamers, ice cream and even pieces of candy! If you don’t like Egg Nog, good luck avoiding it today because it is, after-all, National Egg Nog Day.

How to celebrate – Have some Egg Nog! Make your own Egg Nog, even though it’s cheaper to just buy it. Have a Merry Christmas Eve.

December 23rd Festivus

Well if you are tired of the old Christmas trappings you may want to look into Festivus, its a non-traditional was to celebrate everything not Christmas! It was created by Daniel O’Keefe to honor his first date with his soon to be wife back in 1966. Daniel’s son, Dan, was a writer on Seinfeld and took the idea to the television show which declared the new holiday on December 18th, 1997. So if you are fed up with Christmas, Chanukah and Kwanzaa try Festivus… it might work for you!

How to celebrate – Don’t actually celebrate anything! Get a Pole for your Christmas Tree, nothing on it… just plain. There are no real decorations for Festivus so don’t worry about decorating.
