Philippe Henri de Girad of France first came up with the idea of the tin can sometime in the early 1800’s. Nicholas Appertin, another Frenchman came up with the idea of canning in 1809. Apparently both were great thinkers but not so much great doers as it was an English man, Peter Durand who patent the first tin can, also in 1809. Ezra Daggett and Thomas Kensett were given the US patent on Jan.19, 1825 in the US. All of this is sort of interesting but I find the most interesting thing is that it was Ezra Warner, in 1858, who invented the can opener. Bet that made all those people who had canned their food really, really happy!
