August 31st National Eat Outside Day

So this could easily have been called picnic day but eating outside is basically the same thing. With summer coming to an end you should consider using one of the last days before colder weather sets in and you no longer want to sit under the shade of an Elm Tree. Of course if you live in Florida as we do, you may want to reconsider this as August is one of the hottest months we have. Still it’s nice to take the family out, or friends, and enjoy a meal in the great outdoors, even if it’s just a PB&J sandwich.

How to celebrate – Have a picnic. Plan a picnic with your family. Make it a picnic party and invite friends!

August 30th Frankenstein Day

Probably the best known monster ever created – Frankenstein’s Monster. Today we celebrate Frankenstein Day on author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelly’s birthday, in 1797. 21 years later, in 1818, she wrote Frankenstein…or, as it was called originally, “The Modern Prometheus”. She had a sorted life with a lot of tragedy including three children (basically) dying at birth and her husband dying relatively early in their marriage. She did have one child that survived named Percy. She wrote a number of other works, none as famous though as Frankenstein.

How to celebrate – Read Frankenstein, or “The Modern Prometheus” which is notably different from what the movies turned her book into. Find out what other stories Shelly wrote. Read about Shelly’s life as it is a story in itself.

August 29th International Bat Night

Okay, so here comes a mouth full… tonight is celebrated on the last Saturday night in August that leads into a Sunday morning in August. You need a day just to celebrate remembering that one! Anyway, it was created in 1997 by EUROBATS to educate people about the good bats provide. There are over 1,100 species of bats, and they can live up to 30 years. They eat up to 1,100 mosquitoes in an hour and of course bat guano is among the best fertilizers you can buy. Yes, they are a little creepy and naturally anyone of them could be Count Dracula but beyond that, bats are pretty cool.

How to celebrate – Don’t be afraid of bats. If you have a mosquito problem, put some bats in your yard. Use bat guano in your gardens.

August 28th Race Your Mouse Day

Today is owned by Wellcat.com so if you are actually going to race your mouse (Computer) make sure you get permission from them first. We all do it, we race our computer mouses around the screen while waiting for whatever we are searching for to finally load. The slower your computer speed, or internet speed, the more you race your mouse. You can’t win, there’s really no competition either… it’s just something to do because you are bored. So let’s hope you don’t have to race your mouse a lot today because, well, it serves no purpose!

How to celebrate – Get a higher speed internet. Invent a game where you really can race your mouse. Chill out and wait for it to load.

August 27th Just Because Day

Today is the day to do anything you want…. “Just Because”. Want to go for a walk, you don’t need a reason, just go. Want to have a food fight, no reason needed… “Just Because”. Want to go exploring, why not… you got it, “Just Because”. We always seem to need a reason to do something, whether it’s for fun or for work but throw caution to the wind today and do something just because you want to.

How to celebrate – Do something you’ve always thought about doing but have never done. Create a new hobby. Form a new experiences group.

August 26th National Toilet Paper Day

With the recent panic over toilet paper, it is time we learn a little bit more about it. And with that said, it’s made from trees… there you go, all done. Actually, about 10 million trees are cut down every year to create enough toilet paper for the world. Americans use the most, about 50 pounds a year per person, the rest of the world averages somewhere around 33 pounds. I’m not sure exactly what that means. Toilet paper was first introduced in the US in 1857 by Joseph Gayetty but it was primarily for the rich. By 1871 it was produced commercially for use, and in 1883 it appeared in a roll.

How to celebrate – Try not to waste toilet paper. Don’t hoard toilet paper, it just goes to waste (pun intended). Grow your own toilet paper!

August 26th National Dog Day

If you are a dog lover this day comes every day! Dogs are truly man’s best friend. That’s not holding anything against cats or birds or any other pet you choose to keep, But dogs and man go together like soup and sandwich, cookies and milk, pb & j… well you get the picture. I’m not sure one can survive without the other. Take care of your dog, love your dog, spend time with your dog and they will reward you time and time again. Today was created in 2004 by Colleen Paige, Pet Lifestyle Expert. And yes, the picture for today is the same as the one for yesterday because … well … it just seems to fit!

How to celebrate – Love your dog. Give your dog some special treats today. Make friends with your best friend all over again today.

August 25th Kiss And Make Up Day

First, this day implies you are having some sort of a fight with your loved one and that by kissing you will make up for whatever was wrong. It would be nice if that actually happened, but it it doesn’t. Now before you think I’m getting all negative I just propose you don’t get angry in the first place! Okay, so I know that’s not being real. But maybe instead of disagreeing with your mate you could just kiss and pretend whatever made to mad never happened! So let’s work towards just a kiss day and leave it at that. Today was created by author Jacqueline V. Milgate on her birthday.

How to celebrate – Just don’t get mad! Kiss for the right reasons. Be happy.

August 25th National Banana Split Day

This must have really been a major event when it happened, the first Banana Split. It was created in 1904 in Latrobe, PA by David Strickler, a 23 year old soda jerk at Tassel Pharmacy at 805 Ligonier St (I am sort of surprised they did not include the hour, minute and second it was created). Still, I guess it was sort of a big deal… after all, who doesn’t know what a banana split is!?! The average banana split has between 850 – 1500 calories, although I am sure you can increase those numbers if you choose. But who cares… once you have decided to have a banana split there’s no stopping you from getting it!

How to celebrate – Have a banana split. Try to invent your own ice cream dish. Visit Latrobe, PA.

August 24th National Waffle Day

Waffles are generally made from flour, milk, vegetable oil, sugar, baking powder, salt and vanilla. They are thought to be a breakfast food, or a snack, but can be enjoyed any time of the day. I was a little surprised to find out that the first record of waffles being served was back in 1300’s Greece. International Waffle Day on March 25, was created in Sweden, it’s called Vaffeldagan Day there, but I guess in the US we had to have our own National Waffle Day so August 24th was proclaimed. Even if we “stole” the day, everyone knows of course the most famous waffles come from Belgium (well the story goes a bit differently, but that is for another day and time).

How to celebrate – Make some waffles. Try different kinds of waffles. Visit Sweden!
