August 7th National Lighthouse Day

The first lighthouse in the United States was built, and dedicated, on August 7th, 1789. 200 years later Congress celebrated the achievement by naming National Lighthouse Day in 1989. I wonder how many lives the lighthouses have saved in those years? Also how many men and women have been lost serving at those lighthouses? Most lighthouses have gone out of business with the recent advances in maritime technology but the lure of the lighthouse has never really disappeared. Many have been preserved just so people don’t forget.
