Most people think of llamas as pack animals, they are not… that would be alpaca. They are, however wonderful guard animals and are very, very smart. They can tell the difference between a stray dog and a wild coyote. If you do use them to carry a load for you they will support you to some degree, overload them and they will lay down and refuse to move however. They tend to like to spit when angry, just like their cousins the camel. They won’t bite you but they will kick and neck wrestle you, a battle you are sure to lose! Today was created back in 1932 in Canada to respect this work animal.
How to celebrate – Visit a llama ranch. Try to make friends with a llama. Give a llama a hug.
