March 31st Bunsen Burner Day

We celebrate today Robert Wilhelm Eberhard von Bunsen’s creation, the Bunsen Burner. He was born March 31st, 1811.A Bunsen Burner is basically a long metal tube where gas and air combine to create a flame for heating chemicals while testing the reactions they have. To the question whether Bunsen actually invented the burner, or designed one to built by someone else, we may never really know. It was very confusing reading about all the people involved between 1852 and 1856 when the burner was supposedly finished and it appears the product was made by someone else under Bunsen’s directions.

How to celebrate – Become a chemist. Buy a Bunsen Burner. Visit Germany where it was created.
