March 4th National Backcountry Ski Day

Anybody can ski down the ski trails cleared of trees and clearly marked for all to follow. But the real joy can come when you do a little back country skiing where there are no maps or guides to lead you along the way. The idea of Backcountry skiing started with skiers like Snowshoe Thompson, a Norwegian-American mail carrier, whose job it was to deliver mail to those remote areas that had few, if any, trails or paths to follow. It’s sort of like exploring but on skis. So, take to the back country and explore the winter wonderland around you.. you just may want to mark your way back before getting lost.

How to celebrate – Go skiing. Join the mail delivery system. Learn how to ski.
