November 30th National Mason Jar Day

Today was created by our companies founder, it’s National Mason Jar Day in honor of the creation of the lid for the jar which is actually what the mason jar is all about. Back in 1858 John Landis Mason figured out how to make a lid seal on a jar so that it keep the food inside fresh and kept bacteria and mold out. Until then, people could jar food but it did not last for very long and the risk of getting sick from unsealed food was very high. Mason solved that problem with patent #22186, a way to preserve food we use even today.

January 19 National Tin Can Day

Philippe Henri de Girard, a Frenchman living in England, invented the tin can in 1809. It was a new and wonderful way to save food for both the home use and for selling or shipping. Now there were a few hiccups along the way and maybe a few people got poisoned along the way but it was generally considered a success. Ezra Daggett and Thomas Kensett received the first US patent for the tin can in the US on January 19th, 1825, which is why we celebrate today. Better yet, Ezra realized that the tin can might serve a better purpose if you had an opener which he finally got around to in 1858. Really makes you wonder what they did before that!?!

January 19th National Tin Can Day

Philippe Henri de Girad of France first came up with the idea of the tin can sometime in the early 1800’s. Nicholas Appertin, another Frenchman came up with the idea of canning in 1809. Apparently both were great thinkers but not so much great doers as it was an English man, Peter Durand who patent the first tin can, also in 1809. Ezra Daggett and Thomas Kensett were given the US patent on Jan.19, 1825 in the US. All of this is sort of interesting but I find the most interesting thing is that it was Ezra Warner, in 1858, who invented the can opener. Bet that made all those people who had canned their food really, really happy!

November 30th National Mason Jar Day

Today is Unboxing the Bizarre’s own day, National Mason Jar Day. It celebrates the invention of the screw of lid, and more importantly the rubber sealed lid, that was created by John Landis Mason. Patent number #22186. Before Mason’s invention people stored food but it was often contaminated because air could get inside the can or jar being used. Mason figured out a way to keep the flavor in while preventing germs and bacteria from getting inside. Today the Mason jar is widely used all over the world and not just for canning.

January 19th National Tin Can Day

Tin cans have been around, at least in concept, since the early 1800’s. Philippe Henri DeGirard, a Frenchman, came up with the idea though the original concept was presented by Nicholas Appertin in 1809. Peter Durand got the first English patent in 1810 while Ezra Daggett and Thomas Kensett received the first US patent in 1825. Wow, who knew it took so many people to create a tin can! Oddly, the tin can opener was not created until 1858. So, they canned their goods and they remained canned for nearly 30 years!?! In which case, check those dates on your cans before consuming!

How to celebrate – Read about the world of canning. Start collecting tin cans. Throw a Tin Man party.
