March 4th Hug a GI Day

Soldiers do a lot for us. They protect us, provide shelter in storms and other emergencies, do jobs the rest of us wouldn’t want to do, go places the rest of us wouldn’t want to go, etc, etc, etc So to let them know you appreciate all they do, why not give them a hug? I mean, lately it might just be a good idea to thank them, you know… with Covid and all… but nothing replaces a good old hug. I am sure they could use it to be reminded why they often do a lot of the things they do.

How to celebrate – Thank a soldier when you see them. Realize soldiers are just people too. Care about those who care about you.

August 22nd Be An Angel Day

The idea of being an Angel has appealed to most people at one time or another. To be able to watch over those who you leave behind and still be able to help them in some way. To watch over those in need, those who are suffering, to me Michael Landon. Well, you can’t be an actual an Angel. In fact, according to what a minster told me, humans can not be… ever, ever… an Angel. Beyond that, I was told Angels are a step below man. (I find that really, really hard to believe) But I am not educated in what it takes to become and Angel so I will pass on the information and you can choose to believe it or not.

How to celebrate – Try and help people where you can. Try to be nice and caring. Reach for the stars!

July 11th Cheer Up The Lonely Day

Today was created by Francis Pesek from Detroit, Michigan, on his birthday as he chose to try and help the lonely by making sure they were paid attention to and given the opportunity to enjoy others round them. A very worthwhile cause seeing as how you can actually make a difference in someones life just by caring for a few minutes of yours. If you can make the world better place, would you? Can you spare a little time for those who have no one else to care about them? And what happens if that is you some day that has no family or friends?

How to celebrate – Find someone who needs a friend. Treat others how you want to be treated yourself. Live and help live.

November 13th World Kindness Day

The idea of being kind to each other, animals and the environment in theory is a great idea. It may, or may not, be practical for so many reasons but it starts with one person who is willing for kindness to start. A World Kindness Conference was held in Japan in 1996-97. They made a “Declaration of Kindness” on November 13th, 1997. I am sure their intentions were good but you can not impose kindness on someone, it has to come from inside. We talk about it, profess it but rarely practice it. Maybe today we can be kind to each other, even if its just for one day… it would be a start.

How to celebrate – Be kind to each other. Be kind to animals. Be kind to the environment.

September 21st International Peace Day

It seems like since man was introduced to the world we have been at war somewhere. Greed, pride, misunderstanding, hunger – you name it we find a reason to go to war. But today is a day to celebrate peace. Put differences aside and appreciate what we do have and love our neighbors. The United Nations was formed after World War 2 and created International Peace Day on September 21, 1981. It went into effect in 1982 as the third Tuesday of September, but in 2002, it was changed to September 21st.

How to celebrate – Be thankful for what you have, more than what you could have. Stop blaming someone else for all your troubles. Try and figure out what you can do to help someone rather than hurt them. Partipate in the Peace Crane Project: https://peacecraneproject.org/

July 11th Cheer Up The Lonely Day

With the billions of people on earth it seems hard to imagine people could be lonely, but they are, and in alarmingly growing numbers. People who are shut-ins, or living in nursing homes, are often left alone to wonder about life and suffer on their own believing no one cares. Some of these people have family who have more or less forgotten them. We human beings can solve a little of the suffering just by spending time with those who have no one. Just a few minutes of caring can go a long way. The day was created by Francis Pesek on his own birthday in an effort to recognize there is a need for people to connect.

How to celebrate – Visit someone who has no one else to care about them. Do something nice for someone. Look for that one person in a crowd who is still alone.

March 4th Hug A GI Day

A hug goes a long way, to your mate, your children, your friends, and these are all the same people that make up GI’s. If you think about it, who needs a hug more than a soldier? They more often than not have to do things none of the rest of us have to do, they have to reason with unreasonable people and work in situations the rest of us hope to never be in. So offering them something as simple as a hug can reassure them that they are still a part of the human race and a valued member of society. We even hug our dogs, cats and other pets… and they don’t understand why… but a GI will. and if you don’t know what a GI is, it’s General Issue meaning the equipment every soldier receives.

How to celebrate – Hug a GI! Let a soldier know you care. If you can’t be with them, find a way to send them a hug.

February 17th Random Acts of Kindness Day

What goes around, comes around. Today is a day that we should celebrate every day of our lives. It is simple enough to do. Just be kind, whether to people or animals isn’t as important and why not both! It will come back to you, sometime, some place.

It can be as simple as waving hello to someone, taking a homeless person a sandwich or taking your dog for a walk somewhere you don’t normally go. You never know what might happen or how it might affect someone. it might bring them out of depression, change a bad mood into a good one or just make them feel special if only for a moment. Sometimes that moment is a that is required.

Well today is set aside as that day you go out of your way to make someone else’s day a little better. You can go back to ignoring it tomorrow, but then… why?

How to celebrate – Give a random act of kindness to a stranger today. Do the same for someone you know. Wait for that special feeling you get when you have done something nice for someone else.

July 11th National Cheer Up The Lonely Day

Have you ever felt lonely? Of course you have, we all have. Maybe it lasts a day, a week or maybe even as long as a month… but can you imagine feeling lonely for years? Decades? A Century? There are those that do. There are those that feel lonely all the time, even in a crowded room.

Loneliness leads to depression because people need people. We all want someone to care whether we live or die, laugh or cry or even feel loved. After all, loneliness really is about feeling loved. That’s why you can feel alone in a crowded room, sure there are people there but would any of them miss you if you weren’t there?

We are all animals. There is nothing as sad as seeing a dog or cat sitting on the side of the road that looks like it’s lost it’s best friend. Well, it has, at least for the time being. But animals take on that Steven Stills attitude of “If You Can’t Be With The One You Love, Love The One Your With”. But people not so much so.

And just trying to fool someone doesn’t work. You have to really care, not just act like you care, and it’s not all that hard to do. Just showing someone that you care enough to take the time to show them some compassion. Just one person, you, can make a difference.

And then sometimes it’s just a matter of slapping someone in the face and telling them to cheer up! Just make darn sure that they aren’t bigger than you! (And I am not condoning violence.)

How to celebrate – Try and help someone you know may be lonely. Visit a retirement home. Rescue an animal that needs a home.

June 29th National Hug Holiday

Today is National Hug Holiday Day. It was created by Hugs For Health Foundation. All sorts or creatures need hugs, just make sure they want it before you give them one. And it may be a little odd to ask them but trust me, it will be better for everyone concerned if you ask first.

That G.I. coming home after a deployment will probably want one, probably it would be better coming from his family or his friends.. and I would not go running up to a soldier to give them a hug if they don’t know you.

I am glad bears don’t have the same restrictions we humans do. They will hug practically anything or anyone. Of course you might end up in many tiny pieces if you try to hug one. But isn’t it funny that even one of the most unpredictable animals in the world likes hugs too!

And then there’s your best friend. If they know you they will normally accept a hug even though they probably don’t really want it. It’s kinda hard for them to hug you back. I’m not sure they understand why you are giving them a hug but I don’t think they really care… they just enjoy being around you.

So try using this coupon. See if you give it to someone and they respond by giving you a hug. My guess is they won’t… but woudn’t the world be a better place if we could actually hug each other without being concerned about it.

How to celebrate – Look for someone who needs a hug. Hug your loved ones. Be safe and just hug your pillow, it will not reject you.
