December 26th Boxing Day

Today has been around since the Middle Ages in Europe and it’s probably not what you are thinking it is. Since on Christmas we celebrate by giving gifts to our family and friends on Boxing Day we are to give to those who help us in the community. It s known as the Feast of Saint Stephen and is celebrated by placing money in the Alms Box in the Narthex of most churches, hence “Boxing Day”. We should always remember those who remember us everyday by doing the things we have to have done… like picking up the trash, keeping our electric functioning and anything else we rely of every day.

How to celebrate – Give to others. Remember those who remember you. Celebrate life.

March 26th Make Up Your Own Holiday Day

Don’t like the holidays that are already out there? Don’t think there are enough holidays out there? Well, make up your own holiday! It’s not really all that hard to do although there are a lot of holidays out there so you will need to make sure someone else hasn’t already laid claim to the day you are creating. Some days are copyrighted so you’ll have to be careful you don’t infringe on a legally obtained holiday. You also kind of need to have a decent reason for your holiday. There is a difference between decent and logical. Like today is a decent holiday but not really all that logical.

How to celebrate – Create your own holiday. Create a reason for your new holiday. Celebrate life.

December 31st National Champagne Day

National Champagne Day December 31st

Champagne is a sparkling wine named for the region it comes from in France. It is appropriate that today falls on December 31st when many, many bottles will be uncorked to celebrate the coming of the New Year. Raise a glass and bring in the New Year with something as bright and bubbly as we all hope your future will be.

How to celebrate – Welcome in the New Year. Celebrate the New Year with a glass of champagne. Visit the Champagne region in France for the New Year.

November 28th Thanksgiving

Today we celebrate all those things we are thankful for. Family, country, careers, friends… you name it, then be thankful for it. The first Thanksgiving was celebrate in 1621 and went on for three days. Of course, they didn’t have football games to watch back then or it might have lasted longer! It wasn’t until 1941 that Congress set the date for Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November. In the past, it has been celebrate in September or October before finally ending up in November. If you think about it, there really is a lot to be thankful for. We eat, drink and watch out favorite movies (Or football) on Thanksgiving Day, all the company of our loved ones and friends which is what it really is all about. The food is nice, the entertainment good but having our friends and family with us is everything.

How to celebrate – Make this Thanksgiving a special day for all. Know what you are thankful for. Dress up like a Pilgrim, or a Native American, or even a turkey.

March 26th Make Up Your Own Holiday Day

Now here’s a day you can really get behind and celebrate. Why? Because you made it up yourself! We, at Unboxing the Bizarre, did that ourselves by creating National Mason Jar Day. (It does cost money to list it) So you can do it too, even if it’s just for you friends and family, or maybe just yourself. You can celebrate it the way you want… sort of like you do your birthday. The thing about it is, you sort of need to make it a big deal for anyone to take you seriously. Once again, today was created by the people at Wellness, actually Wellness Permission League. My guess is that they are hoping you pay them the fees to set it up. Right now the problem is, no one seems to know how to contact them. Maybe they are out celebrating.

How to celebrate – Create your own holiday. Celebrate your holiday in any way you want. Create additional holidays, just make sure no one else has claimed it.

July 12th National Pecan Pie Day

Almost as popular and American as apple pie, the pecan pie ranks high among treats enjoyed for the holidays, and every day. This traditionally southern dessert has even become popular in the north, east, west and Europe!

My research did not divulge who invented the pecan pie. I did not spend hours looking it up because it was making me hungry. It has been around for as long as I can remember… and that’s long enough.

Hopefully you can read the recipe above. If you can’t, there are tons of recipes to choose from. One of the more popular these days is combining regular pecan pie with chocolate. It is good, but, to me, not as good as the original. It’s always hard to top something that is already about as good as it can get.

We’ve even miniaturized the pecan pie so that it can be enjoyed as a between meal snack or be served at parties. Of course, most of us eat enough of them to make up for an entire piece of pie… or two. They seem less fattening when they are so small.

Well I love pecan pie. You may not, it’s okay… I’ll eat your piece. A little whipped cram on the top is nice. And you don’t have to wait for a holiday to come to enjoy a piece of pecan pie because like whoever invented this day… you can make up one of your own!

How to celebrate – Have a piece of pecan pie! See if you can improve the recipes, but I doubt that you can. Go nuts!

March 26th make Up Your Own Holiday Day

There are very few things we can do today that haven’t been done, or celebrated, before. I mean, if you think about it, what holiday are you aware of that you haven’t already heard of (give it a minute, it will hit you)? Well today is the day you can create your own holiday!

It needs to be something original, and generally speaking something someone else will want to celebrate with you. You need to pick out a date that relates to what you are celebrating somehow. Like you can’t create St. Patrick’s day in June. Well, you could but probably everyone will think you are crazy! You can’t even create this day because Wellness Permission League already did!

National-Mason-Jar-Day-November-30-1

We at Unboxing the Bizarre did create a national day… National Mason Jar Day. We celebrate on November 30th because that was the day that John Landis Mason’s patent was filed.

So create a day others will want to share with you… like John Smith Day or Betty Jones Day.  If you can think of a good enough reason that your birthday should be celebrated, maybe you can get hundreds, or thousands, or at least one other person, celebrating with you! And once you’ve got it started, it will live forever!

How to celebrate – Create your own holiday. Make sure the day will be of some value to others. Create a song to go along with your holiday.

October 11th It’s My Party Day

Why do we always wait for a birthday or Christmas or Halloween to have a party? Everyday is worth celebrating so everyday should be a party day. You can always find something to celebrate, even if it’s just being alive.

its-my-party-day-fun

Of course this is the season for it. So many things to celebrate. Fall, Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving and a bunch of Jewish and Arab holidays I can’t begin to spell. There are all sort of parties to have too. Costume, masquerade, football (College), beer, extend October Fest, and of course, just a party for the sake of having  a party.

A sixteen year old Leslie Gore sang about it in 1963 and turned it into a hit. Of course in her version she cried a lot but then you sort of expect that with a sixteen year old girl. (Or boy in some cases)

You could even throw a party for your animals! I mean why not!?! They give a lot to you (Some of which you may not want) so give a little back to them! They may not appreciate all you do for the party but at least you can enjoy the party for them.

How to celebrate – Throw a party for some bizarre reason and confuse everybody. Claim every day is your birthday! Throw a party for someone you don’t even know.
