March 7th National Cereal Day

Cereals were put on the American breakfast table starting somewhere around the mid-1800’s. For the most part they were healthy, being made basically of grains and ingredients good for the body as long lasting fillers and energy producing boosters. Somewhere around 1939 we started adding sugar to most cereals and though they did taste better, they became less and less healthy until we have what we have today, cereal with very little to no nutritional value.

How to celebrate – Have a bowl of cereal. Determine what you favorite cereal is. Look for cereals that are healthy at the grocery store.

March 7th National Cereal Day

Cereal came about because by the mid-1800’s people began to realize that eating meat, drinking alcohol and washing it all down with coffee may not be the healthiest way to eat. They, of course, were right. However some, like John Harvey Kellogg, had the right idea they too went a little too far to the extreme insisting that daily enemas and harsher treatments were required to keep one healthy. Will, his brother, promoted Kellogg’s in a lighter mode and made the business what it is today. National Cereal Day has been celebrated since 2005.

How to celebrate – Have a bowl of cereal. See how many types or brands of cereal you can name. Make your own new cereal.

February 5th and 18th Ice Cream For Breakfast Day & Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day

Well there are technically 2 days in February around this theme. The 1st one in the month was created by Florence Rappaport, who had 6 kids, in the 1960’s and set on the first Saturday in February, which this year happens to be the fifth. The 2nd one is a day to bring awareness to childhood cancer. Most of us have cereal and milk for breakfast, and what is ice cream but milk normally with added sweet ingredients that might even be made out of cereal. So, nothing really all that odd about having ice cream for breakfast. Maybe even make it coffee flavored to get a complete breakfast in all in one bowl!

How to celebrate – Have some ice cream for breakfast today. You can try the Almond milk or Oat milk but I’m really not sure how that will work out. Throw and ice cream social breakfast. Support childhood cancer centers.

March 7th National Cereal Day

It’s funny that cereal did not catch on as a breakfast food before German immigrant to America, Ferdinand Schumacher created a cereal in 1854. It was made from oats, and you might better remember them by their 1877 name of Quaker’s Oats. One of the Kellogg brothers patented a flake for cereal in 1891… the other brother bought out his sibling and started the Battle Creek Cereal Company in 1902 and it wasn’t long after that a man named Post started making Grape-nuts in 1898, also from Battle Creek, thus 2 mainstream cereal empires were formed.

July 21st National Junk Food Day

Junk food is often referred to as “Comfort food” because we normally turn to it when we are unhappy or sad about something. It probably does make us happy for the moment, that sweet taste or salty goodness tastes so good… it’s what happens afterwards that makes us even sadder and unhappy.

Sure that ice cream smooths things over for a few minutes, that bottle of beer (which by the way is junk food as well) makes the troubles disappear, and that bunch of french fries makes us forget about anything else while we are eating them. But whatever drove us to those comforts will come back shortly and haunts us, reminding us daily as we look at our stomachs, our thighs, and those frightening man boobs!

The thing is, it’s not the junk foods fault! It’s ours! There’s nothing wrong with junk food, as long as we don’t get carried away. Diets don’t work because when we are on a diet, all we can think about is what we can’t have instead of what we can! Under normal circumstances given the choice between an apple or a candy bar we might actually choose the apple, but when we are denied the candy bar, that is what we crave.

Junk food does have a place in life today. It is convenient, it is fast, and it does taste good. Used when we don’t have time or other choices it serves a purpose. The problem is, in life today we find those conditions more the rule than the exception. A soda will cool you down, but it will also increase the sugar in your body which heats you back up! Diet sodas are known to mimic serious desease. Pizza really isn’t all that bad for you, as long as you don’t eat the whole thing by yourself. Hamburgers aren’t all that bad either, though red meat does have its drawbacks,  it’s more all the bread and condiments we add to it. And fries, well.. there isn’t really much good about them at all. There is nothing wrong with a potato but fry it in grease, add a lot of salt, and shove that in your mouth, it’s a different story.

Cereals are more often than not filled with sugar. Donuts, brownies, chips, and candy have little redeeming quality to them either. It’s not that eating them is so awful for you, its eating so many of them that causes the problems. But for today you can forget all of that as we celebrate junk food day. And tomorrow, we will pay the price for our celebration.

How to celebrate – visit a candy or chocolate factory. Maybe replace that candy bar with a piece of celery or that hamburger with a turkey sub (after today if course). Don’t worry about it and eat what you want which is probably what you are going to do anyway.
