This is an interesting day sort of serving double duty. In 1952 Richard Nixon, running as Vice-President candidate with Dwight Eisenhower, was accused of taking a part of an $18,000 dollar political donation for his own use. In a speech on September 23rd, 1952, he explained how his daughters were given a gift of “Checkers” the dog that might appear as personal use of funds but was not. Sort of like “My dog ate my homework”. I seriously doubt that there was an misuse of funds here but who knows, one way or the other, Nixon ended up in the doghouse…err, White House.
How to celebrate – Read about “Checkers” the dog. Find out all the dogs kept in the White House by Presidents. Come up with new excuses of what the “dog” did to mess up something.
Today is for all those people who work like a dog at their jobs. That is actually a compliment since dogs that do work, are constantly working, they don;t know anything else. The down side of it is that people who work like those dogs often miss out on a lot of life, but if they are happy… what does it matter? We all work hard at jobs we love, if you are lucky enough to find one of those jobs it’s not exactly work you are doing as it is a passion you are living. So if you do work liked a dog because you love your work, good for you!
How to celebrate – Do what you love to do for work. Enjoy your life. Get a work dog.
Today was created by Colleen Paige, Pet and Family Lifestyle Expert, in 2006. It should have been created long before that! Pets are more than just animals in our houses, yards, they are a part of our families, friends and lives. Whether your pet is a dog, cat, rabbit, snake, whatever, it depends on you but you also depend on it. My dog is one of my best friends. No, it’s not like my wife or kid, it’s can’t go have drinks with me at a club and though it tries really hard, it can’t catch the football I throw around in the back yard. But she is always there, trying to make me smile and ready to give me kisses for absolutely no reason at all.
How to celebrate – Love your pet. If you don’t have a pet rescue one from a shelter. Give your best friend a hug. not just today but every day.
In case any one who follows this blog hasn’t caught it, I am a dog person! Is there anything cuter than than a puppy? I don’t think so. Yes they get in to trouble while they are learning but eventually they come to understand what you expect of them. In the mean time, they are fun to watch just like a child and they love you unconditionally. Today was created by Colleen Page, a Pet & Home Style expert in 2006.
How to celebrate – Get a puppy. Dogs live relatively short lives, love them while you have them. Take plenty of pictures while they are a puppy.
I love mutts. They, to me, are the pure definition of a dog, man’s best friend. They have nothing to prove, no trophies to show, and offer nothing but pure love. They have two, or more, breeds in their makeup and that normally seems to balance them into just being a good friend. Some of them are pretty, others are beauty challenged, but that’s only on the outside, they are warm, caring animals that want to do little more than please you. Oh, and sure, they just like people, make mistakes but they will learn and always try better, even though sometimes then still make an error or two. Love your dog and they will love you ten-fold.
How to celebrate- Be thankful you have a best friend. Give your dog a treat just because. Adopt a dog, give them a home… you won’t regret it.
This month, for the entire month, we recognize that one man’s pet may not be another’s. However, it shouldn’t matter. If you love your pet, why care about whether someone else loves it or not? Dogs and cats are the best known pets but frankly they can come from any species on earth (and maybe from elsewhere if you believe in that sort of thing). Horses, snakes, rodents and I assume even the occasional worm could be considered pets. Love them regardless of what they are, they are yours and you should be theirs. And remember, this is not just for today but for the entire month!
How to celebrate – Take your pet for a walk (not recommended for goldfish). Spend more time each day with your pet. Buy your pet a gift.
Puppies are great! So full of energy and cute, they remind us of all the good things in life. Yes they have their accidents and tear a few things up they shouldn’t but for most of us, that’s just a part of loving them. When you look in their eyes they show the love they have for everyone and everything, they are only taught to fear and distrust people by what people do to them. Puppies are still learning and for the most part do want to please their masters. But they are kids and have to rebel at least a little. And just like children, enjoy them while you can because they do grow up fast. The nice thing about that is, then you have the best friend in life you could ever have.
How to celebrate – Get a puppy. Learn what kind of dog is good for your life style. Take plenty of pictures!
Most of us have some kind of pet, a dog, a cat, a bird even a fish. The list can go on and on, I even had a pet bull once in my life (no I won’t explain). The thing about animals are, they can be, and generally are, that friend that we don’t ever have to explain anything to, that doesn’t care what we look like when we get up, or pass judgement in some of our worst moments. They are our friends, our babies, and sometimes a reflection of who we are. So stop and let your pet know you love them. They do that every time they see you.
How to celebrate – Give your pet a hug today (unless your pet is a fish). Give your pet a treat for no reason at all. Spend the day with your pet, you won’t regret it.
They are the same as having a son or daughter, a sister or a brother, or even grand kids. Our pets are sadly here for a shorter time than any of us would like. However, they stay with us all through our lives as we never really forget them. Today, I guess, is a day to be sad again because we force ourselves to remember them. It can also be a good day as we remember the good things they brought to our lives. Today was created by the International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Cremoratories. That may be a little morbid, but the intent is good. Love your pets, they aren’t around for all that long and the one single thing they do really well is… love you.
How to celebrate – Remember your pets that have passed. Love the pets you do have even more. Keep the happy times and lose the sad times.
What is cuter than a puppy? The correct answer… nothing! These potential “Man’s Best Friend” are filled with energy and prone to doing a few things they shouldn’t but still it’s very hard to resist their appeal.
They are a bit clumsy as they learn how to use their legs and control their bodies but that’s part of the fun watching them and playing with them. They provide cuddles and kisses, loving and fun as they become a part of the family.
They say that dog that crosses it’s feet when it lays down shows signs of intelligence. I am not sure why but they do look more studious. Dogs that cross their feet when they run, however, fall down!
I love dogs… not that I don’t love cats and other animals, I do… but dogs offer us something more than any other animal. They want to be with us, they want to be involved in what we are doing (Whether that helps or not) and will offer up their lives to protect us. I don’t know of a better friend than that. They do not judge us, don’t care what we look like (Or smell like) and love us unconditionally.

How to celebrate – Take your puppy to lunch (A picnic)! Try to pick out a puppy from a shelter to save their lives and easy the burden on over stretched resources. Don’t forget the older dogs too though, they need homes and people to love them as well.
