January 5th National Bird Day

They sing for us, keep the insect population down and poop on our cars… what don’t you like about birds!?! Actually they are kinda cool and how many times have we wished we could fly like them? Well, maybe not Superman or Supergirl, but most of us anyway. Today is the National day to watch and enjoy birds! And if you really want something to do, name as many of the between 9,000 and 10,000 species of birds you can name.

How to celebrate – What is your favorite type of bird? Go on a nature walk. Migrate just like the birds do.

January 5th National Bird Day

There are a number of bird days throughout the year but I believe this is the first one of the year. If you are a bird lover, you’ll love today. Of course, if you live in the more northern states you may have to wait a while to see one but here in the south they abound. From some of the most regal, as in the eagle to some of tiniest, as the hummingbird, birds wake us in the morning with their songs, making it a good start to the day. Whether you are a bird lover or not it’s easy to admire their grace and beauty. So spend a little time today looking up and spotting the birds around you and imagine what it must be like to soar above looking down on us all.

How to celebrate – Become a bird watcher. List as many birds as you can name. Get a bird feeder.

May 4th Bird Day in the USA

May 4th Bird Day

Today was created by Charles Babcock from Oil City, Pennsylvania in 1894. We cherish the birds around us today, although I do not recommend standing under them as you admire them. It is hard not to be cheered up by a singing bird…unless of course, they are singing at four in the morning. From the majestic eagle to the ugly vulture, every bird serves a purpose. They are beautiful to look at (well most of them anyway), and aid our environment while putting a smile on our faces.

How to celebrate – See how many types of birds you can name. Go outside and see how many different types of birds you can find. Put out bird feeders to attract birds to your yard.

January 5th National Bird Day

Today is National Bird Day, not to be confused with Bird Day celebrated on May 4th. Although the days are sort of the same thing they are different. On National Bird Day we celebrate those birds native to the United States. The day was probably created by the U.S. Pet Industry in an effort to sell more birds.

There are a lot of birds in the Untied States. Some actually fly! My personal favorite is the Cardinal but that’s because my favorite color is red. My bet is, that if you like a particular bird it;’s because of the birds color. Or maybe their song, or maybe some other reason only known to you.

I live in Florida so we are normally surrounded by birds year round. Most of the time it’s good, sometimes it’s a little noisy but you get use to it. Birds can be majestic like the Eagle or tiny like the mockingbird. Each state has a bird that is considered native to their state, several states claim the same type of bird as their own.

All you have to do is look up at the sky and admire the birds over head. (Just keep your mouth closed as you look up) Also, from personal experience, if you have one of the various birds you can teach words to do not, I repeat do not, teach to say… “Here kitty kitty”.

National-Dance-Like-a-Chicken-Day

It’s interesting to think that Benjamin Franklin wanted the national bird to be the turkey instead of the eagle. What was he thinking!?! My best guess is that he was thinking about lunch.

How to celebrate – Learn your state bird. Get a bird for a pet. Learn to do the chicken dance.

June 20th American Eagle Day

This day was established to raise awareness of this majestic bird. Eagles are in the “Accipitridae” family and come in many varieties around the world. 60 species are in Eurasia and Asia. In the rest of the world there are 14 varieties of the Eagle, 2 in America, 9 in Central and South America, and 3 in Australia.

Perhaps the most famous is the Bald Eagle in America which became our national symbol. Thankfully Ben Franklin’s turkey did not win or else we’d all be known as a bunch of turkeys here in the US – LOL! The Eagle is a bird of prey, meaning it hunts, in some cases animals larger than themselves. It has very keen eyesight and nests in tall trees or on cliffs (Eyries).

The smallest eagles are called boot eagles, 10 pounds and under, living mainly in Asia. The largest are the Philippine Eagles with a wing span that covers over 7 feet. The Eagle has talons that can cut like razors and shred any victim, but its main weapon is its hook like bill, capable of crushing bones.

Suggested ways to celebrate: Watch a documentary on Eagles, Climb a tree and look around like an eagle (first make sure the neighbors aren’t watching), Close your eyes and imagine you are soaring over the land like an eagle.
