January 22nd National Polka Dot Day.
I could not find any real history of when the polka-dot came into being. It was probably right after some painter dribbled their paint on their smock! The polka-dot became very popular after Minnie Mouse appeared on the scene in 1928.
Today you find them everywhere! It’s not like you can really miss them! Flamenco dancers did wear polka-dots in 1867, and in 1962 DC made a hero named Polka-dot Man (he never stood a chance).
How to celebrate – Wear something with polka dots. Paint your house in polka dots. Wear them to Disney so no one can see you there.
Every morning one gets up, brushes their teeth, has a cup of coffee and combs their hair… that is, if they have hair. There are advantages to not having hair, it’s a least one step less every morning of your daily routine. It also tends to make you look meaner so people don’t mess with you as much and some think it makes a person look smarter. It has become very fashionable to be bald. I am not sure why. Many women are choosing to be bald these days as well. It does make a statement! One true advantage is that you are generally cooler in the summer (though you will have to wear a hat to keep from getting sun burned), but then in the winter, your head is colder. Compromise, wear one side of your head with hair, the other without. You’ll get noticed!
How to celebrate – Wear a bald cap for a day to see how you would look. See how many celebrities you can name that are bald. Be free!
Do not be surprised if you find your pet hiding from you today when you get up. They have pretty good memories and may remember that today is National Dress Up Your Pet Day. The day was created by Colleen Paige and surprisingly she is an animals advocate.
I say that because, I have never met an animal that likes to be dressed up! Ever! Now before you get all bent out of shape I know they can look cute. But lets face it, they were born naked! Well then, so are people. Actually, they are born more dressed than people!
Well, at least she picked a winter day where they smaller pets can be somewhat protected from the cold. Since many animals look like their owners, or visa-versa, at least you can wear matching outfits! Sometimes your pets may even look better in that matching outfit than you do!
But let’s face it, do you really think they like it!?! You notice there are no cats in these photos. That’s probably because when yo dress up a cat, you rarely have any fingers left to push the button on your camera.
Now I am all for spending time with you pets and having fun. It’s just that fun should be something shared with your pet, not solely in your eyes. Enjoy your pets, but let them enjoy you too.
How to celebrate – Spend the day with your pet. If you want to dress them up, ask them first. Make sure you get, or make, matching outfits.
What is more useful than a hat? They shade your eyes, cool down your head and make a fashion statement. They also block others view, hit others in the head and take up a lot of room, though none of that really counts. Well today is your opportunity to create your own hat, something I am sure you have always wanted to do but were waiting for permission.
While most of us like to wear hats there are those among us that would prefer not to. They do give you hat head and sometimes say the wrong thing about you. Still, where would baseball be without hats, or football (Although those are helmets). And though it may give you hat head it does keep your hair in place during a storm.
Now no one said your hat had to be pretty, or even functional. There are those in society that wish they had been born a peacock and by fashioning their own hat, they may almost succeed. They do not need to be water proof, though it helps, they don’t have to keep the sun out of your eyes, but then what’s the point?
Other hats are great for camouflage. The army found great use for this and women who like to hide among fields of flowers. (Or men if that’s your thing) When you wear a hat like the one above, it’s very important that you are able to conceal yourself.
There are many things to consider when making your own hat. Is it big enough for your head? Does it go with the rest of your outfit? Will it cause others discomfort?
How to celebrate – Make your own hat. Make matching hats for the rest of your family and watch their eyes light up! (Ya, right) Find the most hideous hat you can find and wear it all day.
The bikini was invented by Louis Reard and worn on July 5th, 1946, though Reard had to find a show girl, Micheline Bernardini to wear it since models of the day would not put the bath suit on. She wore in at the Piscine Molitor Swimming Pool in Paris since the US shunned the bikini while Spain and Italy banned it.
The original bath suit took 30 square inches of fabric to make, something that might be considered quite modest these days. It got it’s name because of the Bikini Atoll where the nuclear bomb was tested. Before that the most revealing bathing suits revealed a little bit of the mid-rift and that was considered daring. Women who ware the suits prior to the bikini had be be good looking with a nice figure. They were considered “Bombshells”.
But the bikini was not the first two piece bathing suit. Ancient Minoan paintings, found on the walls of caves revealed women wearing two piece (We presume) bathing suits. That would have been around 1600 B.C.. Over the years the bikini has changed, some for the better, some not so much so…
However, when the assets are in the right place, the bikini can be a thing of beauty. And that 30 square inches of fabric has been reduced just a tad. In fact, I would venture to say that the women of today are getting sunburns in places the women before the bikini didn’t even know they had.
How to celebrate – If you have a bikini, wear it. If you don’t, enjoy others wearing it. (Most have spent all winter trying to be able to fit into it!) You might require more than 30 square inches of sunscreen so stock up. Go to the beach and enjoy the view.
