February 1st No Politics Day

Don’t you get tired of all the politics? The daily drudge of who hates who and who is better than who? Does it really matter? it seems like all the politicians are after is what is good for themselves, not the people they lead. Of course, what is good for one is generally bad for another so I guess politics will never change.

It just seems like we are getting further and further apart, those who are conservative are getting more conservative while those on the liberal side are getting more liberal. We use to come to the middle to get things done, now all we do is get further and further apart so someone is always upset.

So here’s a day where we forget all that. Forget about who is a Republican and who is a Democrat and just get along with each other, like we use to. No military threats, no global warming, no speeches saying nothing we haven’t heard before.

Maybe it would be better if we got rid of all political parties and just let the best man or woman win the election based on who they are and what they believe in. It isn’t going to happen but its a nice dream.

How to celebrate – Don’t talk politics today. Don’t listen to the news, it’s bound to be political. Pretend you are neither a Democrat or a Republican.

Fairy Tales are created from myths or legends. Most think they were created for children but they weren’t. In fact some are rather gruesome in their original form, cutting off toes to fit in shoes, chopping off the heads of frogs and many included gnomes, mermaids and giants.

February 25th Winter Olympic Games

In case you decided to take your vacation to Mars this month I am reporting that today is the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics. It all started February 9th, and ends today, February 25th.

This year has had the normal rises and the normal falls, the ups and downs and created new heroes. It has seen the beginnings, maybe, of a better relationship between North and South Korea and openly gay athletes making their declarations.

We have seen shirtless flag bearers, nothing new, and people from other countries around the world competing in a lot of sports many of us have never heard of, or know how to play. It is maybe the only place on earth where people from different countries get along with each other.

These were the XXIII games with the next Winter Olympics coming to Beijing, China in 2022.  Whether you take pride in your country, or marvel at the ability of other countries to produce stars, the Olympic Games normally offer the best the world has to offer, something you would think we could learn from.

February 24th Open That Bottle Night

Tonight is the night to open that bottle of wine or champagne that you have been saving forever but never seem to get around to. What have you been saving it for!?! It’s time to open it up and share it with someone, a lover, friend or even a stranger if that’s all that is available!

I mean, if you think about it, what have you been waiting for? On top of that, why drink alone. If it’s that good, prove it to someone, if it’s not at least you’ll have someone to share your disgust with. Beverages are meant to be enjoyed, not stared at through a label.

This holiday was created by “Tasting’s” Dorothy J. Gaither and John Brecher, I assume, to get people to try the bottles of wine, champagne, scotch, bourbon… even sodas and see if it’s been worth waiting for.

It is nice to have that full wine cellar. It shows class and breeding and that you really aren’t an alcoholic because you haven’t already partaken of all that booze you have! But there is a point of, “what’s the point?”

Open That Bottle Night always comes on the last Saturday of February, so the date does change from year to year. Don’t miss it or you’ll have to wait another whole year to try that bottle of whatever it is you’ve been waiting for.

How to celebrate – Well… open that bottle up! Have a wine tasting party. Be sure to write down what you like, and forget what you don’t like!

This might not be the sort of day that we as human’s appreciate all that much but our dogs sure do. It’s International Dog Biscuit Day, mean it’s not just a day for American dogs, but dogs all over the world!

There are so many types of biscuits that one could go dizzy just trying to figure out which one is best for their dog. The key here is, take your dog with you to the local pet store and let them pick it out for themselves. That is, unless you have already tasted the biscuits they prefer and know what they want.

There are biscuits that clean their teeth, help their hips, make their coat shiny, perk them up, calm them down and nearly everything you can think of. The key, however, is that the dog likes the biscuit they have been given. most of us use the biscuit as a reward system and it’s not much of a reward if they do not care for the biscuit in the first place.homemade-dog-treats

Of course you can make your own biscuits if you prefer. It takes time and a lot of effort but when you see the smile on their face it’s worth it, isn’t it!?! Well, no… not really when you consider you can also buy them something they like just as well with very little effort. That said, it is your choice. But keep in mind that is that 50 cent treat ends up costing you 10 dollars you may have made the wrong choice.

For those of us that love our dogs, there is nothing like rewarding them with their favorite treat after they have gone out of their way to do something good. Mt dog prefers whipped cream. Yes, I know it’s bad for her but she loves it anyway!

How to celebrate  – Take your dog shopping with you for biscuits. Find recipes to make your own biscuits. Take your dog to Starbucks for a puppy latte.

Jimmy Buffet probably did more than any other person in history to promote the Margarita. This drink can be served on the rocks, frozen or straight up. It may have been first served in 1938 but there is a definite reference to the drink in a 1953 Esquire Magazine.

It is made with 1 ounce of Tequila, a dash of triple sec and the juice of ½ lemon or lime. And don’t forget the salt! Lime makes the drink a little more sassy, lemon a little softer.

February 21st Read A Card Day

It seems a little odd that today is read a card day since there is no real holiday associated with it. However, it still can be a good day to read a card. Particularly to re-read a card that you have already received. Or to send one you meant to sent. I mean, how cool would it be to receive a card for no reason at all!?!

Or how about leaving one to a co-worker, of course unsigned. They’ll be wondering all day who gave them the card. Although, in the world today maybe that’s not such a good idea. Sad, you can’t really be nice to anyone anymore.

And Heaven forbid anyone give out Valentine Day Cards anymore. After-all, that means someone may like you… we can’t have that anymore now can we!?!

I think it’s still safe to read a baseball card. It’s pretty cool, it has all kinds of information on the back of the card. Of course it depends on whether they are a pitcher or a position player. And then you have to read all those years where they were getting started (Normally not so good) but then as they rose through the ranks it gets pretty interesting. I always find it a little interesting that when a player can hit safely 3 times out of 10 they are considered a really good hitter and get paid millions of dollars. I couldn’t, but then I am not earning millions of dollars for doing it either.

So if baseball isn’t your sport you can always get football cards, or basketball cards, or… well, if anything is popular you can get a card of someone that plays, acts or is a star of some kind. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had cards like those for the everyday worker. The back of the card could be like hobbies, interests and jail records!

How to celebrate – Enjoy getting a card while you still can. Enjoy giving a card while you still can. Make up cards for people where you work, it should get a few laughs!

February 20th Love Your Pet Day

I love animals.  They commit to us humans without expectation, though they do hope a lot! If you are going to have a pet, you need to love it or don’t bother. They have feelings too, they need love just like any other animal including humans.

There are certain things you should probably not share with your pet. Like taking your fish for a walk (Unless you bring the tank with you) and I definitely suggest not taking your cat swimming.

Cats are special creatures. That’s probably enough said right there! We have ten cats, yes, I said ten. Each of them has their own personality and have to be treated accordingly. They are very loving though (When they aren’t ripping you apart).

I have to admit though, I am a dog person. Dogs are, to me, very special. We have only one dog but I absolutely adore her. They are great company, a little easier to predict than a cat, and always want to spend time with you. You can talk to them, it seems like they understand you, and they never repeat what you say.

And given the chance, animals will get along with each other. My cats adore my dog too. And she has a great deal of fun with them, chasing them and being chased by them. We also have fish but ours are not real cuddly.

How to celebrate – If you have a pet, love it. Get your pet a special treat today to remind them you care. Try and guess what your pet is thinking.

February 19th President’s Day

If you are or were, a President, this is your day. Most of us think it is a day to celebrate the Presidency of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, but it actually a day to celebrate all the Presidents we have ever had (In the Untied States).

Now you may, or may not like some of the Presidents but you have to admit it’s a tough job no matter who is in office. You can’t please everybody, and sometimes you can please anybody.

We have celebrate those who have served as President since 1968. Lyndon B. Johnson was our President in 1968 and I doubt he felt very respected. Perhaps that’s why this day got stated in the first place! I cannot actually understand why anyone would want to be President, I understand why we need one, but what a thankless job.

But we always seem to find somebody! Or they find us? Many have been war heroes, others business men, lawyers, actors and many have been qualified, and others not so much so. But if you stop and think about it, what makes someone qualified to be President?

Wel, honor those Presidents you choose today, disparage those you don’t like but be thankful either way that you didn’t have to face what they faced every day of their lives!

How to celebrate – Pick at least one President you like and celebrate them on this day. Try and name all the President without looking. Trump is the 45th (But how many served more than one term!) Imagine a President as King, pick the one you think would have been the best.

February 18th World Whale Day

World Whale Day – February 18th

Founded in 1980 in Maui, Hawaii, today honors the humpback whale during the Maui Whale Festival put on by the Pacific Whale Foundation. The whales are regular visitors in the area and have long been honored with the natives there.

These are among the largest mammals on earth and are said to be very gentle often coming to the rescue of swimmers and surfers.
