California’s “fields of gold” have been cherished by Californians since they first were discovered. Though the flower was admired for hundreds of years it did not become the state flower until March 2, 1903. In 1996 Governor Pete Wilson created California Poppy Week on May 13th-18th and finally in 2010 the California State Senate made April 6th, via bill 37222.12, officially California Poppy Day. I hear the fields are amazing, many plan on visiting California as the Poppy Fields bloom.
How to celebrate – Plan on visiting California when the poppy fields are blooming. Plant your own field of poppy flowers. Figure out exactly what a poppy is?
June 6th National Gardening Exercise Day
Gardening is fun. It is also therapeutic, builds muscles, and helps burn calories. There are number of different gardens you can tend to… vegetable, flower, herb… and even rocks. You will need to plant your garden, weed it, water it, and enjoy it. It may help to talk or sing to your garden as well, although I am not sure it does a rock garden much good. You will need to determine what type of garden you want, and where you will want to place it. Besides plants, you will also need tools, clothing, hats, and water pails or hoses.
How to celebrate – Choose where you want your garden to go. Choose what type of garden you want. Plant your garden.
April 5th National Dandelion Day
Most of us think of Dandelions as weeds, well they are. However they are flowers, some think they are pretty, others still see them as weeds. Native Americans believed the Dandelion had healing powers. No one is sure if they actually helped anyone but as with many medicines, it’s what’s in your mind that makes you feel better. That said, people realized that you could eat Dandelions and they have used them ever since. They are colorful, apparently taste, at least, okay and are pretty. Don’t make them just weeds in your world.
How to celebrate – Get to know your weeds. Appreciate
Dandelions instead of hating them. Try flavoring your favorite dishes with
