August 1st Friendship Day

On today you should celebrate those friends you have, remember those friends you’ve lost and try to make new friends. The day was created by the U.S. Congress in 1935, just prior to World War 2 starting. In 1997 the United Nations named Winnie the Pooh as their ambassador of friendship across the globe. (Some how it figures the UN would use a fictitious character to support friendship!) Anyway, friends are important, they enrich our lives and lend us support when we need it… and they are just cool to hang with when we don’t.

How to celebrate – Gather your friends around you today for a cook out or any meal you choose. Go out and try to make new friends. Remember those friends you’ve lost. (The best times, not the worse)

July 31st Mutt’s Day

Pure bred dogs are pretty to look at for sure but if you want to have a fun, loyal dog you are by far better off with a Mutt! it is estimated that 8 out of 10 dogs are mixed breeds, I doubt they really care. Most are really smart, most are really fun and most love you for you just being you. Unless you are looking to breed you dog or show them at a dog show, who cares about how “pure” they are!?! People aren’t all that “Pure”, why does your dog have to be. Dogs are meant to be a friend, not a show toy that only makes us feel better, not them. Today was created by Collen Paige in Los Angles, California in 2005.

How to celebrate – Love your dog. Love your dog. Love your dog.

June 24th National Handshake Day

Remember back when we were allowed to shake each others hands? It was greeting similar to bumping elbows! It “Sealed the Deal” and recognized someone else was present, it introduced new friends and made peace with old enemies. In fact, the handshake came because of ones enemies. Believed to date itself back to the early days of Rome, when one confronted someone who once had been an enemy they offered the hand of friendship showing they had no sword, or other weapon, in their hand ready to strike. Today was created by Miryam Roddy sometime around 2005 while working for Brody Professional Development in Jenkintown, Pa.

How to celebrate – Look for pictures of people shaking hands so you can remember what it was like. Learn the new ways to shake hands (By not using hands). Wear rubber gloves so you can shake hands.

June 8th Best Friends Day

Who is your best friend? If you have to stop and think about it, they probably aren’t your best friend. Can you have more than one best friend? Well maybe, but then they really aren’t your very best friend because best friend identifies a individual, not a group. Now you might want to keep who is your best friend to yourself because you don’t want to hurt your other friends by not identifying them as your best friend. So in your heart, let yourself know who your best friend is but keep that information a secret, at least to everyone else.

How to celebrate – Determine who your very best friend is. Take all your best friends to lunch! Give your best friend a hug.

April 18th Pet Owner’s Independence Day

Another odd holiday from the good people at Wellcat.com, created in 2002. The general idea is that anyone owning a pet can take today off , if they work, and spend it with their pet. Of course lately, we all have been spending more time with our pets since we have had to be at home more. I am not exactly sure what the Independence Day is all about? Maybe it’s because Pet Day was already taken. While it makes little, to no, sense to me… it’s okay. I love my pets and I am independent of them. (They do not influence my vote)

How to celebrate – Take your pet to lunch. Just make like it’s a regular day and give your pet all the love you can.

February 20th Love Your Pet Day

Why have a pet if you aren’t going to love them? They pretty much love you whether you are nice to them or not. I do love animals, and I have lot of them – cats and dogs (all rescues). Not so thrilled about snakes as pets but I do understand a lot of people love their snakes. You should show your pet love everyday, but maybe love them a little extra today. More treats, more hugs and though they probably don’t understand what you are saying, they do love it when you talk to them.

How to celebrate – Love your pets. List as many pet types as you can without looking. Adopt a pet if you get a chance.

January 11th Step In A Puddle and Splash Your Friend Day

This is a day that if you aren’t careful you may lose a few more friends than you gain. When we all were kids we probably didn’t mind getting splashed by our friends, we may have even looked forward to it, and returning it. But as we get older, not so much. Weddings, funerals and high society affairs are not places to splash a friend. In fact, I can’t think of a good place to splash a friend except maybe at the beach and even then, you’d better take care.

How to celebrate – Think of all the people you could splash but then, don’t do it. Go to the beach. Look for more friends.

December 28th Card Playing Day

Oh, the weather outside is frightful but playing cards inside is delightful… so if it’s snowing, break out the cards. Most of us know at least one card game we can play, a lot of us know a bunch of card games we can play and a few of us know too many card games we can play. Cards do help us pass time and they help us learn to concentrate and focus. It’s also a great time to talk 9over things that have happened and learn about family members and friends. The act of playing cards generally involves other people, though it doesn’t have to so it can equally be a time to think through things and on your mind.

How to celebrate – Get some friends together and play cards. List as many card games as you can without looking them up. If you are really bored, try stacking cards.

July 24th Cousins Day

Today we celebrate our Aunt’s and Uncle’s children, our cousins. If you are lucky as a child, you may grow up with your cousins around and generally speaking, they are within a few years of our own age. I remember growing up with my Uncle being in the Marine Corp and nearly every summer our cousins came to stay with us on the family farm. It was always fun to have them to play with, even tough we did occasionally fight. Did you know that during World War 1 the Czar, Kaiser and royalty of England were all cousins of each other!?! Right before the war started they would attend each other’s parties and vacation at each other’s palaces. Talk about your love/hate relationships.

How to celebrate – If you haven’t talked to your cousins in a while, contact them. Make a family tree. Throw a family reunion.

May 4th Renewal Day

Check all those things you need to renew today. It may be as simple as a library card, a credit card or your favorite book of the month club. The main drive of the day is to renew old relationships and friendships that may have fallen out over the years. If you have friends, or even loved one, that you have not spoken to in years maybe use today as an excuse to renew those relationships. We all say things and do things we regret, it’s time to put them in the past, move forward, don’t stay in the past. Use today to renew anything that needs to be renewed, you won’t regret it.

How to celebrate – Check all your cards and see what needs to be renewed. Check all your subscriptions to see if they need to be renewed. Renew old friendships lost over time.
