January 15th National Hat Day

Probably one of the best known hats in history has been the Top Hat, created in 1797, and first worn by James Heatherington. Guess he was making a fashion statement, just like most of us do when we were a hat today! Hats are an extension of our personality, mood and style. A hat often says a lot about us without us having to say anything. Of course, sometimes it just to keep the sun out of our eyes or to keep the top of our head warm or from burning under a hot sun. So why do you wear a hat? What do you think it says about you?

How to celebrate – Wear a hat today. Pick a hat that tells what mood you are in for the day. Pick which hat you have is your favorite.

September 15th Felt Hat Day

In the mid 1900’s, 1930’s and 40’s as well as before, today became the day to traditionally put away all your other hats and grab your felt hats out of the closet because cooler weather was on the way. The day was observed by both men and women in an effort to keep their heads warm. Today we do not wear hats as much, probably because we have different ways of cooling our selves with air conditioning and riding in cars instead of on horseback. But if you do wear a hat, this reminder of the cooler days ahead should be observed!

How to celebrate – Start wearing hats so you can change to felt hats on September 15th. Wear a hat for protection from the sun. Check to see what fabric your hats are made from.

January 15th National Hat Day

Can you imagine going through life without every wearing a hat? I can’t. We wear hats when it rains, with various costumes and naturally soldiers wear all sorts of hats (Helmet being the most important) We wear hats when riding bikes, motorcycles or racing cars. We wear them when the sun is shining, at construction sites and when playing baseball. So I ask again, can you imagine going through life without ever wearing a hat? Maybe, if you don’t have a head!

How to celebrate – See if you can name all the different types of hats. Count how many hats you own. Make a special hat display.

September 15th Make A Hat Day

Hats can be fun, but they can also be expensive! So, to keep your budget within reason maybe it’s time to learn how to make your own hat. Hats can be made out of practically any material. Some may be more practical than others though. It use to be that hat makers could only work for so long because the use of mercury was so heavily relied on that the Mad Hatter Syndrome was a real problem. (Go ask Alice) Anyway, it easy to make your own hat out of paper if you choose. It might not work well in the rain but is it all about the making or the wearing? You decide.

How to celebrate – Decide what kind of hat you want to make. Decide what you want to make your hat out of. Wear your hat proudly!

October 6th Mad Hatter Day

Besides Alice, the Mad Hatter is probably the best known character in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I have to wonder what drug Lewis Carrol was on when he wrote this story. Maybe he was a little to close to his local hat maker, since most hats were made using mercury early on in history, and hat makers often went mad – hence the Mad Hatter. The 10/6 in his hat is probably the cost of the hat, 10 shillings and a sixpence. Today was created in 1986 by a computer group in Boulder, Colorado, who were probably bored, and maybe even driven a little mad themselves! Okay, maybe a lot. The intent of the day is being silly for the day, which can be fun for everyone, so long as it does not get carried away.

How to celebrate – Be silly! Wear the Mad Hatter’s hat. Read Alice in Wonderland.

May 24th Don’t Fry Day

Once again, with summer approaching and the weather better it’s time to get out and get a little sun! The thing is, don’t go out and get too much sun. The UVA and UVB rays the sun hits us with can be dangerous. Over 76,000 cases of skin cancer come up every year and much of it is preventable. The use of sun screen has helped, but covering up helps even more. It’s okay to get some sun and it’s even good for you creating Vitamin D which your body needs. However, most of us go overboard so that we can get that golden tan that seems to make us look healthier. The problem is that while we may look great we may be slowly killing ourselves. So go ahead and get some sun, enjoy the warmth, just protect yourself so you are around long enough to enjoy even more.

How to celebrate – Get your tan from a bottle. Find the sun screen that best suits you. Wear a wide brimmed hat to protect your face and neck.

January 15th National Hat Day

Do you like to wear hats? Have you ever worn a hat? Do you think hats are cool? Well if you answered yes to any of those questions, today is your day! It is a day to proudly wear your hat of choice and show the world that you believe it is truly a to honor the hats you have.

Hats once were worn to keep your head warm, protect it from something like a mace being beat against it or to show your place in society. None of that is really in play anymore, well maybe the keeping your head warm particularly if you are bald.

But hats do make a statement. It can tell people you are wealthy, crazy, cool or just like hats. There are certain times and places you do not want ot wear your hat, like when you and in a crowded area and your hat takes up the space of four people. When you sit down at a theater to watch a show or when you are riding public transportation.

Times to wear a hat for sure include, walking through a construction zone, performing in a parade or pretending to be an international spy. The spy thing doesn’t work well anymore since everyone knows spies wear hats so they are easily identifiable.

How to celebrate – Find your favorite hat and wear it. Make a hat that identifies your family. Get one of those really cool hats that carries a drink for you with those really long straws.

September 15th Make A Hat Day

According to the calendar, we are all supposed to make hats today. If you keep it simple, it’s easy enough to do, the more complicated it gets the longer it will take. There is something in that I see mimicking life a lot.

When we are young we wear several hats. A child and a son or daughter. It does not take a lot of effort on our part to achieve either end. We blunder our way through the day either doing childish things or things may mirror our parents. It is a learning experience as we decide what we will do when we get older.

As we age, we become husbands and wives, employees and employers, a parent and still a son or daughter but with far different requirements, soul mates and enemies… it is where life takes a turn and we become busier and some of the hats we wear are difficult. They take longer to complete and change a great deal from day to day. Some are very serious, like being a surgeon or mentor, others less so like a clown or a hobo. But even the lesser hats we wear are more complicated and difficult than when we were children.

Some hats identify who we are and what we do. A helmet for a soldier is still a hat but it is a lot more dangerous than a helmet for a football player. (Though football can still be dangerous) The point is, we wear many, many hats and the idea of being able to make our own today lets us step out of our comfort zone, either to be more serious or more fun.

So make your own hat today and wear it proudly. It doesn’t matter what its made out of, it only matters how we wear it.

How to celebrate – Make your own hat today. Make hats for your friends that fit what you see in them. Start a hat collection.

What is more useful than a hat? They shade your eyes, cool down your head and make a fashion statement. They also block others view, hit others in the head and take up a lot of room, though none of that really counts. Well today is your opportunity to create your own hat, something I am sure you have always wanted to do but were waiting for permission.

While most of us like to wear hats there are those among us that would prefer not to. They do give you hat head and sometimes say the wrong thing about you. Still, where would baseball be without hats, or football (Although those are helmets). And though it may give you hat head it does keep your hair in place during a storm.

Now no one said your hat had to be pretty, or even functional. There are those in society that wish they had been born a peacock and by fashioning their own hat, they may almost succeed. They do not need to be water proof, though it helps, they don’t have to keep the sun out of your eyes, but then what’s the point?

Other hats are great for camouflage. The army found great use for this and women who like to hide among fields of flowers. (Or men if that’s your thing) When you wear a hat like the one above, it’s very important that you are able to conceal yourself.

There are many things to consider when making your own hat. Is it big enough for your head? Does it go with the rest of your outfit? Will it cause others discomfort?

How to celebrate – Make your own hat. Make matching hats for the rest of your family and watch their eyes light up! (Ya, right) Find the most hideous hat you can find and wear it all day.

January 15th National Hat Day

Not to be confused with all the other hats days, today is National Hat Day. I am not sure what makes it different but…. who cares!?! History shows that the first Top Hat ever worn was worn by James Heatherington from London, England. We know this because in 1797, when he wore it, he caused a riot. He was fined for being a menace to society and allowed to go, we assume still wearing his Top Hat.

The main purpose these days of wearing a hat is to show off your style, or lack thereof. There was a time when men would not leave the house without a hat on and women were frowned upon when they did not wear a hat. But those days have come and gone. Now a hat is just an extra accessory for style or flare.

In the Old West, large brimmed hats were worn to keep the sun out of the eyes as men and women worked outside. It also kept the face from burning. Oddly enough, a hat in winter is very important not only because your head is where most of the heat leaves your body, but because sunlight reflecting off the snow often leaves a nasty sunburn. Soldiers also wore hats even though back in the day they offered little protection, but it did keep the sun out of a shooters eyes so they could aim better.

Helmets these days do provide a great deal of protection, not only for soldiers, but sports players, construction builders, and motorcyclists. Even Storm Troopers and Darth Vader wear helmets!

So whatever your reason for wearing a hat is, today is your time to show it off. Show your fashion, your sport, or what you do for work, by proudly wearing something on your head.

How to celebrate – Pick out your favorite hat and wear it today. Start a hat wearing club and pick today, and other days, to wear your hat! Take a count of how many hats you see worn today.
