It may surprise you but International Chefs Day was created in South Africa in 2004 to help educate children about eating healthy. Dr. Bill Gallagher, the “Godfather of all Chefs” created today because he wanted all the top chefs to teach something healthy, and tasty. Chefs are aware of the value of eating healthy and they know the best foods to eat. That doesn’t mean they always provide them, but they are capable of providing a healthy diet. Today, every chef in the world should provide their idea of a healthy meal that they think everyone will enjoy. Maybe put the recipe on the internet and teach everyone how to make the dishes. Then, we all can enjoy eating them!
How to celebrate – If you are the chef of your home, provide a healthy meal today. Make a list of all the chefs you can name. Try dishes from a chef in every country in the world.
Well, with recent events we all have probably been doing this lately anyway, eating what we want…or what we can get our hands on anyway! The funny thing about all this is that since many of us have been eating junk food, we sort of want something healthy for a change. Who knows, maybe this will change our ways of life and help us in the long run. But for today, just eat whatever you want, unless you are allergic to it! Just don’t let it fall into a bad habit again!

Finally a day Wellcat.com created that actually is a good idea! True, it isn’t a real holiday but maybe it should be. Eat More Herbs and Use Less Salt Day! It’s good for you and makes sense since this is the time of year we generally harvest our gardens before the cold starts to set it.
We all know the more salt we eat the worse it is for us. However, a lot of foods are bland and need something to wake up the flavor or we simply won’t eat it. Salt was the first choice and it also preserved food for later consumption. But it makes us fat by retaining water and cause numerous other health issues.
Now no one is saying not to use salt at all, just use less. There are all sorts of herbs we can add to flavor dishes. Most of them are actually good for us as well. And they are sort of fun to grow, generally not requiring as much attention as say, tomatoes. These herbs can also be preserved so that what we grow over the summer we can use all year long.
You can taste them ahead of time to see what you like, and don’t like and how much of them to use in a dish. They are often stronger, requiring less, and some may not mix all that well so you will have to experiment a little. That’s part of the fun though and no one can tell you what is right or wrong since it is your taste that makes them work.
They also brighten up your dish and make it look more tempting. So finally, a day from Wellcat that might actually have meaning and be useful. (And no doubt they stock in companies that sell the seeds to grow your own.)

Today is National Food Day, the day we are supposed to recognize real food as opposed to the junk we often eat. It is defined by two words, “Eat Real”.
So much of what we eat contains high levels of sugar, salt, and fat. It tastes great but it is really bad for us. In truth, the real foods, those not processed in a factory, really do taste better. Fresh fruits and vegetables have an abundance of flavor without adding anything to them. The meat we eat is often processed in such a way that much of the protein is replaced by fat leaving us the factory farm version of what we think we are eating.
Sadly we get use to the flavoring added by the factories and when we taste the real thing, we think something is wrong with it. All the nutrients have been cooked out of the food leaving us with an artificially flavored substance. Sugar is added to mask the disappearing taste and gives us a watered down version of the real thing and something far less healthy for us. If you look at the contents of a can of soda you will see it contains nothing that we need to be adding to our diet.
And while it’s bad enough what we are doing to ourselves think of what we are doing to our children. We are practically guaranteeing them a life of health issues, weight issues, and the same lack of energy we are suffering from ourselves.
The Center For Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) started this day back in 2011 with the target date of October 24th 2012 to accumulate all the work done for the year. The day is celebrated with over 3,200 festivals across the US and a national conference in Washington, D.C. There are also thousands of schools that participate throughout the year.
How to celebrate – See if there is a program in your community celebrating “Eat Real”. If there isn’t, see what you need to do to start one. Check with your local schools and see if they are teaching the children to “Eat Real”. Go pick some fresh fruit from a u-pick farm and enjoy!
