January 6th Cuddling Day

It’s probably cold where you are so why not cuddle up with a friend, lover or even a favorite pet! It will keep both of you warm. It is true that females generally like cuddling more than males, not really sure why except maybe females normally get cold faster than males. Or maybe that doesn’t have anything to do with it. Anyway, if you like to cuddle, or like to please the one you cuddle, today is the day to do it. Today is all about giving and feeling the warmth of another and expressing your love for them without expecting anything more.

How to celebrate – Find someone, or something, to cuddle. Set aside time to spend with a loved one. Start a fire if you have a fireplace.

June 29th Hug Holiday Day

Remember the hug? That action where you grab someone else and hold them tight, it was so soothing, so calming, so rewarding. Those were the days! Well, I write these blogs in advance of the day so hopefully by the time this comes out we will be allowed to hug again. If not, then maybe soon. Do you find yourself hugging your dog or cat more? How about that Teddy Bear? People do need to hug, to get that reassurance that someone cares. It just seems to culminate all those emotions that come together at once. In joy or sorrow, it cements relationships and builds new ones. If you are allowed, give someone a little tighter squeeze… they may have to make it “hold” them for a while.

How to celebrate – If allowed, hug someone. Learn to give “air” hugs. Buy a really big teddy bear.

March 4th Hug A GI Day

We all know we owe our troops all the support they can get. Sometimes that’s money, sometimes that’s food, sometimes that’s just a hug. Men and women who guard our freedom are under stress all the time. Not only do they have their friends and loved ones to worry about as we all do, they have the worry of someone shooting at them. They are the front line of everything we hold dear and are often overlooked as we go through our day. Since we do not see them, we forget about them. They deserve more.

How to celebrate – Hug a GI. Take a GI to lunch. Send out a care package to a soldier.

January 21st National Hugging Day

Who doesn’t want a hug? Okay, maybe not if you just came inside from a mud battle with the kids but how often does that happen? Hugs aren’t just a human thing either. Dogs, cats, elephants, practically every creature in the world hugs. It reassures someone, provides comfort and equalizes us. After all, whether you are wealthy or homeless, the idea of a hug means the same thing. For years men were shunned for hugging, that’s changed. Now a hug shows that you mean something more to someone than just a handshake or nod. Today was created by Rev. Kevin Zaborney in 1986 and we thank him. For today we can hug without being thought of asout of place or out of step.

How to celebrate – Hug someone. Hug your pets. Receive a hug without judgement.

July 15th Global Hug Your Kid Day

It’s the little things in life that we often find we miss most when they are no longer available. That is the reason why we have to take advantage of them while we can. Today was created by Michelle Nicholes after she had the opportunity to hug her child one more time before he was gone. He died at 8 and 1/2 years old of cancer. It’s not fair but it happens. So you take advantage of every day you have with someone because you never know if it might be your last. It would be nice to have your last memory of them as an expression of love rather than pain. If your children are young, it’s pretty easy to get a hug, when they get older it’s more difficult. Take the time to give them a hug while you still can… because you never know.

How to celebrate – Hug your kids. Hug someone you love. Hug your pets.

March 4th Hug A GI Day

A hug goes a long way, to your mate, your children, your friends, and these are all the same people that make up GI’s. If you think about it, who needs a hug more than a soldier? They more often than not have to do things none of the rest of us have to do, they have to reason with unreasonable people and work in situations the rest of us hope to never be in. So offering them something as simple as a hug can reassure them that they are still a part of the human race and a valued member of society. We even hug our dogs, cats and other pets… and they don’t understand why… but a GI will. and if you don’t know what a GI is, it’s General Issue meaning the equipment every soldier receives.

How to celebrate – Hug a GI! Let a soldier know you care. If you can’t be with them, find a way to send them a hug.

July 16th Global Hug Your Kids Day

It seems odd to me that some days are created out of tragedy. Days that should come every day requiring no special holiday be created. Today was created by Michelle Nichols in 1998 for her son, Mark, who was dying from brain cancer. He was only 8 and a half years on this earth. In our daily grind, maybe sometimes we forget to stop and do the simplest things that really make life worthwhile. Like hugging your child.

It doesn’t matter what you do to make a living, how much money you make or how important you are to the world… there is nothing more rewarding than hugging someone you brought to life. You can be the President of the United States or a homeless person roaming the streets, the hug is just as important both for the receiver and the giver. Who is, after all, more important than your child?

The correct answer should be, has to be, your child. And giving them a hug is about as selfish as you can get because in reality, what you give will be returned ten fold. We all need hugs, it makes us feel wanted and needed and the reward is knowing that you mean enough to someone that they will hug you. And who more do you want to mean something to other than your child.

So do something easy today that actually means something, hug your child. Let them know you love them, and let them show their love for you. It’s a win-win for everyone.

How to celebrate – Hug your kid.

June 29th National Hug Holiday

Today is National Hug Holiday Day. It was created by Hugs For Health Foundation. All sorts or creatures need hugs, just make sure they want it before you give them one. And it may be a little odd to ask them but trust me, it will be better for everyone concerned if you ask first.

hug 2

That G.I. coming home after a deployment will probably want one, probably it would be better coming from his family or his friends.. and I would not go running up to a soldier to give them a hug if they don’t know you.

I am glad bears don’t have the same restrictions we humans do. They will hug practically anything or anyone. Of course you might end up in many tiny pieces if you try to hug one. But isn’t it funny that even one of the most unpredictable animals in the world likes hugs too!

And then there’s your best friend. If they know you they will normally accept a hug even though they probably don’t really want it. It’s kinda hard for them to hug you back. I’m not sure they understand why you are giving them a hug but I don’t think they really care… they just enjoy being around you.

So try using this coupon. See if you give it to someone and they respond by giving you a hug. My guess is they won’t… but woudn’t the world be a better place if we could actually hug each other without being concerned about it.

How to celebrate – Look for someone who needs a hug. Hug your loved ones. Be safe and just hug your pillow, it will not reject you.

April 26th Hug An Australian Day

Who hasn’t wanted to live in Australia at some point or another? For some unknown reason people seem to love Australians, maybe it’s the accent, maybe it’s the lure of  the land down under.

hug-an-australian-day

Even the animals native to Australia seem to be hug-able, though I am told they can rip you apart if they want to. (But then, so can a cat from any country)

For some reason we think of most Australians as being in pretty good shape. They are believed to be rugged and buff, The dream of every non-Australian. I am sure not all Australians are that way, just all those who are photographed seem to be that way.

And it’s not just the men, the women seem to be in pretty good shape themselves! And who doesn’t want to hug somebody that you can actually get your arms around!?!

And I can tell from personal experience, there is no dog on earth more hug-able than an Australian Shepherd. (Though I am told they are not really from Australia.) We can thank Wellcat.com for today.

How to celebrate – Find an Australian you can hug today. (Though make sure they want you to hug them first.) If you choose an animal, make sure they want to be hugged as well. Pretend like you are an Australian and give out hugs for free.

March 4th National Hug A GI Day

We often think of our soldiers as tough as nails, capable of spending days alone, and requiring nothing but food and water, but in fact, they are humans just like the rest of us. There is nothing more powerful than a hug given at just the right moment.

Soldiers can be tough, they have to be, but even Navy Seals and Army Rangers (and Delta Specialists) melt in the arms of someone they love. And that is not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of caring.

hug-a-gi-day

So often we only think of hugging someone when something has gone wrong. When they need that human contact to stable their ship or make them feel safe and wanted. The fact is, a hug can give you faith, hope, and cheer, but it doesn’t need to wait for that moment of need, it can come at any time, for any reason, from any one.

It can be a welcome home… a goodbye… an expression of love. It can be a sign of great joy, great sorrow, or a just because moment. So if you know a GI (short for General Issue which every soldier receives when first joining up), offer them a hug for all they do for us. Make sure they know it’s coming though or you might end up on the ground.

How to celebrate – Appreciate what a soldier does for you and me. Don’t forget the veterans who may not wear the uniform anymore but are still soldiers at heart. Send a virtual hug to a soldier over seas.
