August 16th National Tell A Joke Day

All of us like to laugh, most of us like to tell jokes, probably very few of us are ready to be stand up comics. But the idea of passing on a good joke you have heard is both pleasing and rewarding if someone actually laughs! So do your best, tell a joke (But only if you can remember the punch line) and try to get a laugh. It is in the presentation, more than the actual words spoken. “What’s the best thing about Switzerland?”… “I don’t know, but the flag is a big plus.”

How to celebrate – Read a joke book, Learn how to deliver your joke. Be polite if someone tells you a joke, at least snicker.

August 16th Tell A Joke Day

For some of us, this isn’t as easy a day as it sounds like. We all know jokes, we just don’t all tell them well. There is an art to telling a joke, the timing and expressions, not giving away the punch line too soon. They say being funny is one of the hardest things to do. You have to find a way to tell jokes without insulting anyone or being crude. Most of the funny stuff is being crude while you are insulting someone! Drinking heavily sometimes makes this day better.

How to celebrate – Learn a few jokes! Go to clown school. (Though a lot of people don’t find clowns funny) Laugh at everything someone says.

March 22nd National Goof Off Day

Today was created by Monica “Moeller” DuFour and her Grandfather back in 1976. It contends that we all need a day to goof off to break up the days we work so hard. I’m not sure that is actually accurate because I think most of us tend to goof off as much as we work, but that’s okay… particularly today! If all you do is work, constantly, you probably would bore yourself if you had to listen to yourself. Sometimes the greatest ideas one gets are when they are playing around or taking a break. Also understanding those you work with also comes easier sometimes when you are goofing off, when their guards are down and they speak more freely.

How to celebrate – Find some time today to goof off. Find those you can have fun with to goof off with. Let your hair down and live!

August 16th National Tell A Joke Day

We all need a good laugh. It breaks tension and actually makes us more productive as the day goes on. Even if they are stupid jokes they cause our minds to think about something other than the mundane things we have to do get by. The funny thing about bad jokes, we tend to remember them even more than the good jokes… that’s because we hear them, register them, and in an effort to forget them, we actually train ourselves to remember them! Sometimes they even make us laugh later, when no one is around, as we remember them and just how stupid they actually were! Sometimes they are actually brilliant in just how stupid they actually are.

How to celebrate – Make up some bad dad jokes of your own. Get a joke book. Get a bag of Laffy Taffy and read all the jokes on the wrappers.

August 11th Presidential Joke Day

Okay, so before we even get started I am not making any political statements here! I think all the presidents do that well enough for themselves. And that’s what today is all about, those presidents with a sense of humor about the world, and themselves. After all, if we can’t laugh at the way things are, all that’s left is to cry.

So the today started in 1984 when President Ronald Reagan thought his mic was just being tested when he said, “My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you that I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes”. Unfortunately his mic was live and heard by the nation. However, known for a sense of humor, Reagan was allowed such gaffes.

Today, I feel, we all take what Presidents say way too seriously. And of course the media repeats it over and over, trying to say what they think the President meant. They don’t know any better than we individuals do, they just like to hear their own voice as they explain everything, right or wrong.

We disrespect our leaders by putting their faces on such things as toilet paper. Replace it with your own face and see how you would feel! Is it still funny? Does it have anything to do with the person themselves?  Most presidents just represent the feelings of their base, not really caring about the other half of the country. Why should they, we are the joke to them!

Is it that we can’t take a joke anymore or that we are the joke ourselves? Either way ,lighten up a bit and laugh with the president instead of at him. The whole world wil be a better place for it.

How to celebrate – Listen closely to the president and learn his sense of humor. Don’t take everything a president says so seriously. Go back in history and learn who the funniest presidents have been.

Got a good joke!?!! Probably not, most jokes are only semi-humor.  It is up to the individual to find the humor in them and sometimes it takes a bit of a search.

But at least someone has tried to brighten your day a little, or maybe a lot. The jokes I love the most are the ones that you get an hour after they’ve been told. You are walking along, with that frown on your face and suddenly you get the joke someone told you and you light up like a Christmas Tree.

Of course if you are like most people, when you go to retell the joke you can remember everything except the set up for the punch line.  Of course that can be funny too! Or how about those people that go back, saying… “Wait a minute! I forgot the best part!

Like there ever really was a best part! But that’s okay, the effort was made. And even a failed joke brightens up your day and once that is accomplished, it spreads brightening up other people’s days.

So go ahead and ell that joke that maybe no one else found funny, once you find someone else to laugh, you will make a life long friend!

How to celebrate – Tell the best joke you’ve ever heard today. If you don’t have a best joke, buy a book of jokes and memorize at least one. Don’t worry if you are a good joke teller or not, sometimes the performance is better than the joke itself!

April 14th International Moment of Laughter Day

One thing 99.9% of us like to do is laugh. Some of us live to laugh. Some of us can laugh at ourselves, which is really, really good for you. It is also very contagious. Try not laughing when someone around you is laughing even if you don’t know what they are laughing about!

Even animals laugh. Cats, dogs, monkeys, snails… well, maybe not snails (Although they could I suppose it’s just their faces are so hard to see). laughing is very good for you. Laughing releases endorphins, and does a lot of other technical things, that improve our quality of life. It has been known to make sick people better and at the very least, it doesn’t hurt anyone. (Unless you laugh so hard you bust a gut or are laughing at someone who is very angry).

Even the smartest among us know the value of laughter. They may be laughing at us instead of with us but if we laugh along at least we won’t be left out! I know I do a lot of things that should be laughed at every day! If no one else is around it’s up to me to get the ball rolling and start laughing.

People are prettier when they laugh as well, probably because they become a little more vulnerable then they were when they weren’t laughing.  We were meant to laugh, it takes less effort to laugh than to frown.

Even sometimes in sorrow there is laughter, or there should be. I remember going to a very somber funeral, nothing funny about that but it was outside and most of the women were wearing hats. Well, this lizard kept jumping from hat to hat without the people wearing the hat knowing it. Those who saw it happening just couldn’t keep from laughing, though I know we were thought less of because of it. The day was created by humorologist, Izzy Gesell.

How to celebrate – Pick your moment today to just burst into laughter. Always look for something funny going on around you. If you look for it you will be surprised what you find. Get others around you to laugh, you will be improving their quality of life!
