Have you ever had an event occur on a day and wondered why that day or why that event? Well today is your day to ponder that a little more. It’s all about those current events going on around you that are celebrated for seemingly no reason at all. Now these are days that are not readily explained to everyone, like Christmas or Halloween. These are days and events that seem to come up out of nowhere and now exist for no reason at all. Like all people that want to be recognized as normal but throw events taking pride in the fact that they aren’t normal. Naturally we have no clue what normal actually is but even then, throwing a special event to show you aren’t “normal” while trying to blend into society is just a bit… curious.
How to celebrate – Look for Curious Events. Make a list of days you’d like to celebrate that aren’t celebrated. Just accept everything, you are going to have to sooner or later.
What a great day to come right after Saint Patrick’s Day! Awkward moments day! I don’t know about you but I am likely to have had a few of them yesterday and not even known it! Today we embrace those moments where something we didn’t have planned, likely embarrassing, occurred. There is nothing you can do about it so you might as well enjoy it the same way others do! It’s time to get over it and realize you are not the first person that sort of thing ever happened to so… smile, deal with it and get on with your day. So is today about remembering those moments and suffering through them, or forgetting about them and letting them go? Your choice!
How to celebrate – Try remembering your most embarrassing moments. Try to ignore others most embarrassing moments. Live and let live.
Would you rather be like everyone else in the world or would you rather be considered… peculiar? Most of us think of peculiar as being bad but it doesn’t have to be. It can also mean someone who is just out of step with the rest of the world and sometimes that can actually be good. Would you call Albert Einstein peculiar? How about Martin Luther King? Jesus? Mohamed? Buddha? Accept your own, and others, uniqueness as a good thing with possibilities instead of something bad and limiting. After all, those who are the most peculiar are generally the most interesting as well.
How to celebrate – Learn what makes you peculiar to others. Celebrate your oddities. Live and let live.
If you are scared of the number 13 you have Triskaidekaphobia. Personally, I am afraid of that word! It is believed that Friday the 13th got off to a bad start as the day that Able killed Cain. At least it was a bad day for Cain. The Code of Hammurah omitted the 13th when it came to making laws. Many buildings do not have a 13th floor (well they do have but they don’t label one as such). And Captains would not put to sea if they had a crew of 13. So if today is bad luck for you, even though we generally make our own bad luck, then you might want to avoid doing much today. If you meet a guy named Jason, run!
How to celebrate – Go back to bed and wait for the 14th. Observe Backwards Day today making it the 31st. Just get through your day anyway you can.
Peculiar People make our days interesting. Who know, maybe someone even considers us peculiar. Peculiar people are the kind of people that books are written about, movies are made of and help make the world go round. Some peculiar people are bad, some are good but most are just like you and me, and I guess I am proud of being peculiar. If you think of what peculiar actually means, I think most of us want to be, and are, peculiar. After-all, what good is it if we are exactly the same? So take pride in who you are, what you do or how you think, even if its different than everybody else. So long as you do not force your ways on others it will make their lives better too.
How to celebrate – Enjoy being different. Respect others. Make a list of what you think makes you different than everyone else.
Nov. 20th Absurdity Day
Can you imagine a world where ever T was crossed and every I was doted? Where everyone wore the same clothes, spoke the same language, and ate the same foods? To me, that would be absurd. What do you consider absurd? Is it some one who dresses in strange clothes or wears their hair in different colors. I admit that is not my cup of tea either. But, they, just as I, have the right to think the way they want, dress the way they want, and to do the unexpected from time to time. Without these absurdities we would all be the same. I don’t always like them, sometimes I totally disagree with them, but we have the right to be as absurd as we want to be… when I don’t like it, I’ll just look the other way.
How to celebrate – Live and let live. Try something you’ve never done before. Make a list of things you think others might find absurd about you.
You know, the history of many of these days is interesting and somewhat unusual. I find today very odd since it was sort of created by the character Larry Davis (Actor Richard Kline) on the television show “Three’s Company”. Now Larry always wore something gaudy, at least by the standards of today. In a place like New York City probably no one would ever notice. Gaudy can also be described as unusual. By example most Halloween costumes are gaudy. So if you normally wear something others describe as a Halloween outfit then you are certainly dressing gaudy. Maybe it’s you style, maybe it’s you character, maybe it’s because you’ve forgotten to laundry for a week!
How to celebrate – Wear something gaudy today. Wear really large jewelry today. Stand out in a crowd today.
Do you know any peculiar people? Are you peculiar yourself? Some of us are and we are proud of it! I mean, what is good about living a life where you look like and act like everyone else? That’s boring. And since there are apparently so many of us it is only fitting that we have a day of our own to celebrate our… differences!
Some people use disguises, the old watermelon on the head trick is one way to show your difference. And it is fairly practical, you have a snack to munch on during the day and you are recycling at the same time.
Others strive to be like historical people who were odd. In fact, most of the people who stood out in history were… peculiar. To say Einstein, Caesar and the Ringling Brothers were not odd is to not give them credit for what they accomplished!
Some show their oddness by what they do or what hobbies they have. Collecting snails might qualify… or maybe, dancing on popcorn… or maybe, giving singing lessons to monks! Whatever it is that makes you different than everyone else be proud of it!
Just don’t take it too far. Be un-ordinary, extraordinary, unusual, strange, odd, uncommon, intriguing, different, abnormal or quirky. Just don’t step on anybody else’s chance to be themselves.
How to celebrate – Find some way to show how unique you truly are. Pick up a new hobby. Be proud of who you are.
In a world where the normal is absurd, absurdity having its own day is not as unusual as you might think. From politics to football, something meant to be so simple has become so complex that it all borders on the absolute absurd.
If you think it could never happen, you can expect it today. Those who look for the absurd find it every day. Those of us that don’t look for it often miss it. That person wearing two different colored shoes. A bird acting friendly to a cat. An airplane flying upside down.
There are laws on the books in every state that were written years ago and do not really apply today, but since they have never been removed they might still be enforced. Laws such as you can’t chew gum in public. It is illegal to keep cattle inside your living quarters. You may not drink hard liquor until after 8 in the morning.
For a while, I taught guitar to kids in a music store. Some were good, some weren’t… that is to be expected. What I did not expect was that a girl could get her hair caught on a straight guitar string. Some how it got so tangled we had to cut her hair from the string. I would never have thought it could have happened if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes.
So expect the unexpected and keep your eyes open for all the absurd things you see today.
How to celebrate – Keep a journal, or even take pictures with your phone, of all the things you see that are odd today. Do something unusual to add to Absurdity Day. Read a newspaper and see how many absurd articles you can find.
Odd people are interesting. There is a difference in being odd and being dangerous, although they do often lead to the same results, but not always. There are people out there that dance to their own tune and there is nothing wrong with that.
As long as they do not harm anyone, including themselves, they do seem to entertain us in their own way. There are numerous people who like to keep snakes as pets. I think that is very odd but then they probably find things I do as being very odd as well. There is a certain pride in the fact that we are different from someone else. If everyone was the same it would get very boring.
I am relatively sure you know someone you find “peculiar”. The actual definition of peculiar is “Odd, strange. Unusual.” At some point, that definition fits all of us. Sometimes it’s a constant condition, sometimes it’s only occasional, either way it still qualifies.Do you like to dress up on Halloween even though you are an adult? Some find that very odd. Do you like to jump out of an airplane? Some find that ridiculously odd. Some like mayonnaise on their french fries, others cannot understand why.
In fact, that’s what makes the world go round and as long as they do not force others to get involved with them, it’s also okay. I like Ranch dressing on my hamburgers. People use to look at me like I was insane but those same people eventually tried it themselves and now they like Ranch dressing on their hamburgers as well. Guess that makes they just as strange as me. In truth, many things we do today were once considered strange by some one, some where. Now they are normal, by example… tomatoes were once believed to be poisonous but then some brave soul tasted them and found they were not. They were considered strange because they tried them, today we eat them nearly as fast as they can be grown.
And in some cases, being odd can really be useful. Like the man above can also serve as his own kitchen draw, saving that space for other items.
How to celebrate – Find your own peculiar outlet. See how many people you would consider peculiar around you in a single day. Start your own peculiar club, find others who would like to join you in your own unusual talent or hobby.
