February 11th Make A Friend Day

You can never have too many friends! (I know you actually can but let’s not get into that). You can even have different friends for different things. Maybe one is for going bowling and another for going to a pub, and one for shopping and well, the list might never end. And maybe your making friends with others will expand your friends list of friends. So go out today and make some new friends, it might actually be fun!

How to celebrate – Make a new friend. Make sure to include your old friends. Remember to get a friend you must be a friend.

August 1st Friendship Day

On today you should celebrate those friends you have, remember those friends you’ve lost and try to make new friends. The day was created by the U.S. Congress in 1935, just prior to World War 2 starting. In 1997 the United Nations named Winnie the Pooh as their ambassador of friendship across the globe. (Some how it figures the UN would use a fictitious character to support friendship!) Anyway, friends are important, they enrich our lives and lend us support when we need it… and they are just cool to hang with when we don’t.

How to celebrate – Gather your friends around you today for a cook out or any meal you choose. Go out and try to make new friends. Remember those friends you’ve lost. (The best times, not the worse)

July 30th International Day of Friendship

Today we are supposed to celebrate our friends all over the world. The first country in the world to suggest this was the US who began practicing it in 1919. The UN made it an international day in 2011, nearly 100 years later. When people suggest that the US is not friendly towards other countries they ought to look at history, though I know that’s not very popular today because everyone thinks the media tells the only history we need to know. The truth of the matter is, we are repeating history even now we are just too stupid to know it. So as you celebrate the International Day of Friendship just remember where it began.

How to celebrate – Contact a friend in another country. Make a friend in another country. Learn from history so you don’t make the same mistakes that were made before.

June 8th Best Friends Day

Who is your best friend? If you have to stop and think about it, they probably aren’t your best friend. Can you have more than one best friend? Well maybe, but then they really aren’t your very best friend because best friend identifies a individual, not a group. Now you might want to keep who is your best friend to yourself because you don’t want to hurt your other friends by not identifying them as your best friend. So in your heart, let yourself know who your best friend is but keep that information a secret, at least to everyone else.

How to celebrate – Determine who your very best friend is. Take all your best friends to lunch! Give your best friend a hug.

February 11th Make A Friend Day

We all could use another friend. We need that support of someone we can listen to and who will listen to us. They may not always agree but if they know us well enough they will have our best interest in mind. (Not that we will always see that) A friend is someone who will tell you the truth, whether you want to hear it or not. Old friends can become jaded to what we have already said and lose interest if we keep repeating the same issues over and over, even when they have offered ways of breaking that trend. A new friend may hear something different than what your current friends may have heard and end up being really helpful. Or maybe, just maybe, you can help them. “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”

How to celebrate – Go find a new friend. Start hanging out somewhere you don’t normally hang out. To get a friend you have to be a friend first.

July 30th International Day of Friendship

Friends are very important to people, and animals. In fact, if you have a good friend you can get through practically anything. Historically, the United States was actually the first country to have a friendship day back in 1919 but it was not nationally recognized. Paraguay was the first to declare a national day of friendship on July 30th, 1958. Since then the United National has declared an International Day of Friendship in 2011. It’s amazing that it has taken this long to create the day, of course the world hasn’t always been that friendly of a place. I guess in many ways it still isn’t. Maybe if we try a little harder this is something we can actually accomplish. Then again, maybe not. But there is not harm in trying. The more friends we have the less enemies. But the only way to have a friend is to be a friend, it has to come from both sides.

How to celebrate – Say hello to an old friend. Make a new friend. Treat others how you want to be treated.

June 8th Best Friends Day

So who is your very best friend? Your BFF? How many BFF’s have you had in your life? Friends are bound to come and go. We all would like to have them there forever but it just isn’t practical. Is your mate your best friend, they should be because hopefully you’ll be spending a great deal of time with them. But it’s not fair to not have a BFF aside from your loved one, after all who are you going to complain to about what’s wrong with your mate if not for you best friend!?! Today is the day to remember your best friend, honor them and remember just how much they really mean to you.

How to celebrate – Take your best friend to lunch. Call your best friend if they live to far away to visit. make a list of all the best friends you’ve had.

July 30th International Day of Friendship

We all strive to have at least one friend that we can rely on, talk to, and share things with, hopefully offering the same in return to them. Friendship does not see colors, creed, or religion… it sees a human being, or animal, standing in front of us. It is up to us to determine what we do with that.

There is an old saying that you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family. Maybe the place to start making friends is with your family. At least you have something in common with them to start with. Actually, if you think about people in general, we have a lot in common with each other. More in common than the differences that separate us.

The United Nations sponsors International Friendship Day, though it has been celebrated in the US since 1919 indirectly. The first country to officially celebrate the day is Paraguay, on July 30th, 1958. While their efforts often fall short of what might be expected, at least they try.

It takes so little to be a friend to anyone, including animals, and so much to be an enemy. I often wonder if dictators and world leaders had been treated differently as children if they might not be so into themselves that they might even be decent people. We may never know since they spend all their lives not trusting anyone. And a friend does have to be trusted.

It’s time we started looking for friends in life instead of creating enemies. I’m not saying you need to love everybody, that’s not practical, you just need to like them a little.

How to celebrate – Make a friend today. Contact a friend you haven’t talked to in a long time. Figure out what you can do to make yourself a better friend.
