March 23rd National Puppy Day

I love dogs, always have and always will. And every dog starts out as a puppy, and just like your children, they will always be your puppy even when they are a hundred in dog years! Dogs are our best friends, puppies are our new best friends. Yes they are clumsy, sometimes do things we don’t want them to do and it may take them a while to learn what you expect out of them and what you don’t. But if you treat them right, they will unconditionally love you and always remain your puppy. Today was created by Colleen Paige in 2006 of Pet & Home Lifestyle.

How to celebrate – Give a puppy a home today. Remember your dog when it was a puppy. Take lots of pictures of your puppy.

January 14th Dress Up Your Pet Day

Here’s a day your pet looks forward to every year. Be thankful they normally don’t remember it! Take your cat, dog, horse, goldfish… whatever, and dress them up so that you can think of them as human. Pretend it is your pet’s Halloween, they just love it! I mean, as you are dressing them up just take a look at their faces and see just how much they thank you for making them to look so cute. Leave them in that outfit all day or better yet, change them into several outfits so they can suffer even more! Sometimes ya just got to wonder who invents these days… they apparently have very little else to do in their lives… so much so that they want to ruin their pets day as well.

How to celebrate – Go ahead and dress up your pet, at least you are paying attention to them. Ask your pet first what they would like to dress up as. (If they answer, seek help) Treat your pet like a friend… don’t make them do anything they don’t want to do.

July 31st Mutt’s Day

The best dog, for friends and family, is a dog that loves you instead of thinking so highly of themselves. Of course we are the ones that teach them to be uppity and vain. That’s what I love about mutts. They are just here because they are a dog and want nothing more, or less, than being a dog. I suspect even show dogs would rather be a mutt if they had a choice. Yes, show dogs are beautiful and it’s sort of fun to watch them prance around but there is nothing like a dog dog that plays and has fun with it’s family.

How to celebrate – Take your dog mutt out for a walk. (You can’t do that with a show dog because they might get dirty) Let your dog roll around in the back yard. Just love your dog not expecting anything more than getting love back from them.

June 2nd National Bubba Day

Do you know a Bubba? I’ve known a few Bubbas in my day and they do kind of meet that expectation most of us have about Bubba. Of course, there are times we should all be called Bubba, when we often do something out of friendship rather than thinking it through. Being a Bubba isn’t a bad thing, it’s actually very friendly and not all that threatening. Sometimes we even call out pets Bubba, because while they often do things we don’t understand but with the best intentions at heart.

How to celebrate – How many Bubba’s have you known in your life? Who would you tag as a “Bubba”? Do you think you could be a Bubba or not?

February 2nd National Hedgehog Day

The word Hedgehog first appeared in 1450. The animal was also known as the “Urchin” and a “Hedgepig”. For years it was the “Shadow” creature that predicted the end of winter but since it was so small it was replaced in 1887 by the Groundhog, which is a different create. Hedgehogs make good pets but they are a lot more difficult to take care of than people generally think. So make sure you want one before you buy one.

How to celebrate – Get a hedgehog. Choose your pets wisely. See if you can find the hedgehog mentioned in any 1450 literature.

September 25th International Rabbit Day

Those cute little bunnies that hop everywhere they go, including into gardens and then destroy every plant you have growing. Well, they are cute, and cuddly and the third most popular pet in the world. It really is hard to find fault with any animal who goes about living their lives as they were intended to live them. This holiday apparently began in the UK as “Rabbit Charity” Day, assuming because farmers were charitable to them at least this one day in the year and to remind people that the bunny is not just for Easter. Rabbits generally live around 9 years and are capable of moving at 25 mph.

How to celebrate – Learn about the 50 breeds of rabbits. (I would have thought there were more) Learn how the rabbit became a part of Easter. Get a rabbit as a pet. (But be ready to clean up after it)

September 23rd Checkers Day and Dogs in Politics Day

This is an interesting day sort of serving double duty. In 1952 Richard Nixon, running as Vice-President candidate with Dwight Eisenhower, was accused of taking a part of an $18,000 dollar political donation for his own use. In a speech on September 23rd, 1952, he explained how his daughters were given a gift of “Checkers” the dog that might appear as personal use of funds but was not. Sort of like “My dog ate my homework”. I seriously doubt that there was an misuse of funds here but who knows, one way or the other, Nixon ended up in the doghouse…err, White House.

How to celebrate – Read about “Checkers” the dog. Find out all the dogs kept in the White House by Presidents. Come up with new excuses of what the “dog” did to mess up something.

March 23rd National Puppy Day

In case any one who follows this blog hasn’t caught it, I am a dog person! Is there anything cuter than than a puppy? I don’t think so. Yes they get in to trouble while they are learning but eventually they come to understand what you expect of them. In the mean time, they are fun to watch just like a child and they love you unconditionally. Today was created by Colleen Page, a Pet & Home Style expert in 2006.

How to celebrate – Get a puppy. Dogs live relatively short lives, love them while you have them. Take plenty of pictures while they are a puppy.

January 14th Dress Up Your Pet Day

Today was created by Colleen Paige, a pet style Expert. Note, she is not listed as a Pet Lover because I do not know a single pet that likes to get dressed up. Now before people think I am being all negative, I not. After all, how many men like getting all dressed up? They do it, but most don’t like it! And so will your pet. If it’s really cold out then maybe it’s even good for your pet, but I doubt they will think so. So hurry up, take your picture so your pet can get back to being what they really are, a pet.

How to celebrate – Dress up your pet. Make an outfit for your pet. Enter your picture in a dress up pet contest.
