May 26th Don’t Fry Friday

Today falls on the Friday before Memorial Day but really should be every day of your life. It is a day to protect yourself from the sun’s UV rays which can give you a beautiful tan but can also kill you. I watch women i the twenties suntanning themselves not thinking at all about what price they will pay later when their skin is like leather and wrinkled so badly. Or worse, when they have to have operations to remove cancerous skin from their bodies. But, it is their choice and they can choose to ignore the warnings, The good side of tanning is it gives you lots of vitamin D, the bad side is… it kills you.

How to celebrate – Protect your skin when out ion the sun. Tanning is nice but consider the price. Wear a hat to protect your face.

June 28th Insurance Awareness Day

Insurance had to begin somewhere which means that insurance agents had to begin somewhere as well. I didn’t find a name who started it. (Though I admit I didn’t look real hard) I kinda wonder if it wasn’t some guy named Vinnie who said somewhere along the way “You need some protection” from bad things that might happen to you. Never mind that Vinnie was the bad thing that was going to happen. Now we have insurance for nearly everything in life! (Thank Lords of London) which costs us nearly as much as having those accidents happen in the first place!

How to celebrate – Avoid people named Vinnie. Start an insurance company that insures you from insurance companies. Become a secret agent, insurance agent, agent.

June 27th Sun Glasses Day

Sun glasses are cool, they always have been and they always will be. Sometimes they make a fashion statement, sometimes they help hide our identity and sometimes they let us watch things, or people, and not let them know we are watching.

However, all things considered, they provide our eyes with protection from the UV rays that can cause eye damage over the years. They can also help keep dust out of our eyes and keep rain from blurring our view. I know sunglasses have been around since at least the American Civil War. Some soldiers, if they were lucky enough, are seen wearing them in old photos.

And spies wear them to both hide their identity and to watch super secret things going on without those doing it knowing they are watching. They create a disguise… in some cases, not very good disguises but none the less it has some effect.

But mainly, they just make us look really, really cool. Some are successful, some are not. It really does become a matter of choice. The cooler you are as a person the cooler sunglasses you are going to wear.

But let’s remember the main thing is to protect your eyes. After all, don’t you want to look in a mirror and see how cool you look? The only way you can do that is to protect them.

How to celebrate – Find the best sunglasses for you. Don’t just buy them, use them! Pretend you are an international spy while you wear your glasses.

April 22nd Earth Day

The world was in a rather negative place in the late sixties, anti-war, political scandals and social issues were just a few of the problems not just America, but every country, faced.  Gaylord Nelson, a Senator from Wisconsin, realized that if he could harness even just a portion of that negative energy and turn it into something positive he would be doing the world a great service.  He found his cause when there was a huge oil spill on the California coast in late 1969.

He formed a union with another Senator, McClosky, and sought out the the help of Professor Hayes from Harvard and together they came up with the idea of Earth Day.  Hayes formed a unit of 85 people and went to work to establish Earth Day, picking April 22nd because it fell between Spring Break and Final Exams.  They all knew youth was going to be important to their cause.  The first Earth Day came on April 22nd, 1970 and to everyone’s surprise found a following of over 20 million people that showed up to support the efforts.

By 1990 Earth Day had grown to 200 million people in 141 countries around the world.  The Environmental Protection Agency came about due directly to the efforts of the supporters of Earth Day which led to the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endanger Species Acts passed by Congress.  Today there are over 5,000 environmental groups supported by 184 countries.

Sadly, like everything else humans get involved with we have distorted the original premise.  We have made it political with groups from both sides issuing out lies to try and prove their points and gather in as many votes as they can.  There are those who have taken it too far on both sides of the issues and we may never get back to what it was originally all about.  Its first true message was, lets all do what we can to help save our world and make it the best it can be.  All the exaggeration, from all fronts, do is confuse that so simple of an idea.  It was meant to bring us all together, not tear us apart.

Environmentalism

How to celebrate:  First, and the easiest, is just go outside and look at all the natural beauty of the earth.  You could join a group trying to save the environment but please check it out and make sure you can support all they are trying to do.  Maybe even just plant a tree, or a bush, or even a single flower to make your part of this earth a little better than it was the day before.
