December 25th Christmas Day

This is another day you should be spending with your family and loved ones rather than reading a blog. So I’m not going to write much about this, the most sacred Christian holiday… the birth of Jesus Christ. Now it may not have been actually on December 25th, no one knows, but it is the symbol of Christianity and should be respected. (As any holiday with religious meaning) Celebrate today if you choose, honor today because you can.

December 6th St. Nicholas Day

St. Nicholas was a real person, a Catholic Bishop in Greece about two hundred years after Christ’s death. Naturally, being a Bishop, he wore red and did have a long white beard. He so loved children, and the poor, that he was known to put gold coins in socks and spread them out among the needy. After a while, children began to hang socks out for St. Nicholas hoping he would get to them. Santa Claus was introduced by Americans hundreds of years later. While St. Nicholas was a religious character, Santa Claus wasn’t designed to be so. Still, we think that anyone who promotes welfare and happiness can’t be all bad!

How to celebrate – Hang your stocking in hopes that St. Nick will come to you. Visit Greece. Enjoy your holidays.

December 4th Santa’s List Day

So, have you been nice all year or have you been naughty? Sometimes being naughty is nice but being nice is never being naughty! Well, it’s time for Santa to break out his list and make good for those who have been nice and give that lump of coal for those who have been naughty. I bet there was a time in history when getting a lump of coal was actually welcomed! Anyway, that’s not the point. The point is about being good over bad as being good is always subject to ones point of view. Since it is somewhat up to the opinion of the receiver at least try to be good to your family and friends, they are the ones who get you gifts anyway… and try to be nice to your enemies too… maybe they have a reason for being bad.

How to celebrate – Who would you put on a nice list…naughty list. The question is not whether you think you’ve been good or not, it’s how others see you. Make a list of what you consider naughty, and nice.

December 4th Santa’s List Day

What a day. Did you make the Nice or Naughty list? Kids worry about it, adults don’t really care which list they made and seniors don’t even remember the list. Then if you did make the naughty list is there anything you can do to get put on the nice list? Well, of course, we adults know you can. In fact, we do things all year long that could qualify us to be on both lists. People are famous for making lists, we all do it even if it’s just a grocery list. Only Santa makes a list of the bad things we do though. Most of us list those things we are proud of, not the things we would rather forget.

How to celebrate – Pretend you are Santa and make your list. Make a list of all the list you make up. Figure out what you think is naughty and what is nice.

Dec. 18th Answer the Phone Like Buddy the Elf Day

December 18th Answer the Phone Like Buddy the Elf Day

Who would have thought that a simple comedy like “Elf” staring Will Farrell made back in 2003 can have created such a following all these years later. Buddy goes through the trials and tribulation of being a Human who thinks he is an Elf, acts like an Elf and talks like an Elf. He goes to find his father in New York City and, well… if you haven’t seen the movie I won’t spoil it for you. But if you haven’t seen the movie you are probably living under a rock. Today intends that you leave a message on your answering machine that makes it sound like you are Buddy answering the phone. Ah, who actually has answering machines anymore? Anyway the idea is fun, if a little annoying, and it kicks off the holiday season.

How to celebrate – Learn to speak like Buddy the Elf. Never give up on innocence. Visit the North Pole.

December 6th St. Nicholas Day

We all know Santa but not many of us know there was a true St. Nicholas, in Greece, a couple of hundred years after Jesus’ birth. He would later become a Bishop in the Catholic Church and finally a Saint. He use to throw small bags of coins out his window for children to celebrate the coming of the holiday season. The bags resembled socks and are now represented by the hanging of stockings at Christmas. His identity was not turned into Santa until the early 1800’s in America. While Santa is not exactly the religious type, Saint Nicholas was. As a Cardinal he would have worn lots of red and he most likely had a beard in his later years.

How to celebrate – Learn about the real St. Nicholas. Discover who turns Santa fat! Visit Greece!

December 4, 2019 – Santa’s List Day

Christmas is coming and Santa is getting his lists together, or rather his Elves are getting the lists together for him. So have you been naughty or nice this year? You can’t hide the truth from Santa, or rather his Elves (you can’t hide it from Mom or Dad either).

And who is to say what is naughty and what is nice? There are times that being naughty is nice and sometimes when being nice is being naughty. I guess it is all how you view things. So while everybody is getting their shopping lists together Santa is determining who gets what.

There is an incentive for Santa to give out a lot of nice listings. After all, he will have the rest of the year to contend with those he has left on the naughty list. His vacation could even be affected by leaving someone on the naughty list. Naturally if you are going to the beach you certainly do not want to leave sharks on the naughty list.

Even animals want to be on the nice list, well most of them anyway. It affects the rest of their year too! The types of treats they get, whether they get to sleep in the bed with you, whether they get that toy they have had their eye on. Come to think of it, kids and pets are very similar to each other.

So as you are planning your year you should keep in mind which list you want to be on. After all it would be a shame to end up on the naughty list for something you did on December 26th.

How to celebrate – Try and figure out if you are on the naughty or nice list. make up a list of your own and send it to Santa. Plea bargain your year.

December 25th Christmas

It’s Christmas Day. It has so many means to so many people. The true meaning is, it’s the day of Christ’s birth. Now we don’t know the day He was born for sure but December 25th serves the point as well as any other day.

Today we give gifts, eat with our families and celebrate what is most important in our lives… even if we don’t celebrate it for the “right” reasons. The giving of gifts imitates the Three Wise Men giving gifts to Jesus. The tree the three symbols of Christianity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.

We have sort of made up the rest over the years. Santa Claus comes from Saint Nicholas, who was a real person that gave gifts to his village in the name of the Lord. He wasn’t fat either, Coca-Cola did that. No, not his drinking it, they just thought he looked better on the bottle if he was fat.

So today is a birthday celebration that all Christians celebrate. We all do it in our own way and that’s okay. I remember a Pastor telling me that he thought it was great to light up your lawn with every light you could manage to place. It lights up the night and shows all what you believe in, for the right… or the wrong… reasons.

Who hasn’t seen Buddy the Elf (Will Ferrell) in “Elf”? Good, or bad, the character has launched itself into our society and in some way, gives us something to strive for. The movie came out in 2003 and is becoming a classic as we head into Christmas 2017.

To accomplish this feat, you need to answer the phone in a particular way. “(Insert your name) the Elf, what’s your favorite color?”

How to celebrate – Answer the phone as above (I do not advise this at work). Be an Elf this Christmas instead of a Scrooge. Tell everyone your home is the North Pole
