May 2nd Brother and Sister Day

If you are lucky enough to have a brother or a sister, or maybe even both… or more,,, you are very fortunate. You have friends and family already built in for you. Siblings can have very bad relationships but most get along very well having the past, present and future all in common. They have a reason to support and defend each other someone they can rely on when things get rough. No, nothing is perfect but you should celebrate having a brother, sister, or any combination there in and cherish each moment you get to spend with them.

How to celebrate – Go to lunch with your siblings. Plan a family reunion. Enjoy your family while you have them around to enjoy.

May 2nd Brothers and Sisters Day

If you are lucky enough to have a brother, or two, or a sister, or two, today is to celebrate with them their presence in the world and your life. These are generally speaking people you can rely on and who can rely on you. There is a special bond between brother and brothers, sisters and sisters and brothers and sisters. Though sometimes it gets strained it will normally repair itself and reunite the family one way or another. And when you do get mad at them, remember you are very lucky to have a brother or sister, or both… their are a lot of people who do not have a sibling.

How to celebrate – Take your sibling to lunch today. Have a brother and/or sister party. Remember how lucky you are to have siblings.

May 2nd Brother and Sister Day

I know not every brother and sister relationship is perfect but most come close and family is always family. I do not have any brothers but I have two sisters that I adore. They are always there for me and I try to be there for them as well. (Though I don’t always get there) We’ve had our moments too but we always seem to get over them and move on and there is no one I trust more. Love your family because some day they will be gone and you’ll never have that relationship again, at least here on earth.

How to celebrate – Spend time with your brother or sister or both. Plan a family reunion. Do something special for the special people in your life.

May 2nd Brothers and Sisters Day

Though brothers and sisters do not always get along, mainly when they are young, as we grow older we realize just how important they truly are. They are, obviously, family and share more with us than even our wives and husbands often do. Family is so important. These are the people, more often than not, who will take that extra step to help us, be there when others won’t bother and know what we love and what we would prefer not to be involved in. I have two sisters, I could not love them more and enjoy every moment we get to share.

May 2nd Brothers and Sisters Day

I feel bad for families where the brothers and sisters don’t get along, they are family and I can say with certainty that I love and appreciate my sisters. They have always been there for me and I will always be there for them. There is something about family that can never be replaced, it’s not a duty, it’s not an obligation, it’s an honor. Today is a day we get to openly show we care even when so often it’s taken for granted. And maybe that’s okay too, since to expect to be cared for and not have to worry about it is nice too. But then, that’s just what brothers and sisters do.

How to celebrate – Take your brother, sister or both to lunch today. Send them a thank you card for all they do. Just visit for no reason at all.

April 10th National Siblings Day

Today was created by Claudia A. Evalt after the loss of her brother and sister. It is supported by 22 governors and then President, Bill Clinton. Not everyone is lucky enough to have brothers and sisters, yes… I know we call everyone brother or sister but it’s not the same as an actual blood relation. In most cases we grow up with them, play with them, learn from them, teach them, and generally they are close in support when needed. Those that do not have brothers or sisters can’t really relate. That’s not saying anything against them, but how can they. A brother and a sister can be your best friend, or worst enemy, but they were there for your real learning stages and know what it means to share. I adore my sisters, they are key to my life and even though I don’t get to see them as often as I would like, they are there, and always have been (and hopefully always will be!)

How to celebrate – Take a sibling to lunch today. Get together with them on a regular basis even if its just to keep up. Remember they are blood relations; there are fewer things in life that mean more.

April 10th National Siblings Day

If you have a brother or sister, you have a sibling! I know, it’s weird isn’t it! Well, I have two sisters, I count them every day to make sure. I am so happy to have them, of course, I didn’t really have a choice but then I wouldn’t change a thing even if I could.

Now you can’t honestly say that you have always enjoyed having siblings all your life, that would be a lie, but as you get older you realize just how important they are. Those that have never had a brother or sister cannot understand. That’s not a bad thing, they just don’t get the relationship normally bound by, well… relations!

Today was founded by Claudia A. Evart after she lost her siblings, she is the President and Founder of today. The idea of today was supported by Bill Clinton but was never passed into law. However, there are 22 governors that did proclaim the day for their state.

It is true that your brother or sister, or both, are your best friend. There is a bond that  very hard to break and for the life of me, I don’t know why one would even try.

How to celebrate – Give your brother or sister, or both, a call today. Form a brother and sister club in your neighborhood. Have a sibling party!

July 26th Aunt and Uncle’s Day

When we generally think of our aunts and uncles it is with fond thoughts and fun in mind. After all they come from the same stock as our mother or father but don’t have the same discipline issues. So they are more fun, they are more interesting, and in many, many cases, they are a lot weirder!

Aunts are the sisters to our father or mother, most have normal lives like the rest of the family members, but some step away from the norm and live lives much different than we know. If they have children of their own they are more likely to react just as our parents do, but if they do not have children, they may have become airline flight attendants, princesses, mermaids at a theme park, or even political figures.

Whether they are “normal” or not, they are a part of the family and generally love their nieces and nephews, sometimes treating them like their own. They are fun because they don’t have to put up with us 24 hours a day and may have had the opportunities in life few others have.

Uncles, on the other hand, are generally strange. They don’t mean to be, but they are.  Naturally they can be normal people but we always wonder if they are some sort of international spy, a wealthy tycoon, or a deep sea diver.

Whether they are spies or mermaids it doesn’t really matter. We are always happy to see them, want them around more, and wish them all the happiness in the world.

How to celebrate – Call your aunts or uncles, or both and wish them a happy Aunt and Uncle’s Day. See how many of your aunts and uncles you can remember (this includes all the cousins!) Relate a story to the rest of your family about the strangest aunt or uncle you have.

May 18th National Visit Your Relatives Day

They say you can’t choose your relatives, which is very true. However, you have to remember they couldn’t choose you either! So you might as well make do with the best and at least say hello every once in a while, like today.

If your family tree is anything like mine there will be a few surprises here and there. After all, my family tree indicates that I am a long lost relative to Robin Hood. The fact that Robin Hood is fictional does bother me a little, does this mean I was born into a family of cartoon? Could be, I have had many people tell me I was a joke.

Uncle Larry Weird Face

But good or bad, I’m not as unusual as my uncle. (No the photo above is not really of my uncle). In fact I was very afraid of my uncle. He was a nearly 7 foot tall, Blackfoot Native American, bald headed and a General in the Marine Corp. Though I was afraid of him, I did admire him as well. So see, there is something good in everybody… you just have to look for it sometimes.

My Aunt Clover was another character I both admired and thought (To myself) gee, what an off person. (And no this isn’t her either although I wouldn’t put this sort of thing beyond her) The point is, they are probably just as embarrassed of us as we are of them. So embrace they oddities and remember they are family. Good, bad or indifferent we can’t do anything about that and they will be gone all too soon. Who knows, maybe they will leave you a million dollars if you just as so much say “hello”.

How to celebrate – Visit a relative today. If it is practical to go to them, write them a letter, give them a call or email them. Look for the best in all your relatives.

April 2nd Brother and Sister Day

I always grew up thinking that brothers and sisters were supposed to fight like cats and dogs. Well, my dog loves my cats and vice-versa. Now I don’t expect to always agree with my sisters, I have two of them, but I will always love them and respect them and I do miss them when they aren’t around.

In fact, if you ever need to rely on someone to do something for you look no further than a brother or sister. Each has their own personality and ego but somehow, in he end, they manage to work past that and find a way to support each other.

Growing up, each has to establish their place but once done, they generally find more they agree with than they dis-agree on. The older they get, the more they think alike. An older brother or sister is always there to defend the younger. The younger normally looks up to the older for suggestions and figuring out life.

There are times when the brother and sister are inseparable. That is only logical. In most families they are raised the same, given the same values and are extensions of each other. They have different ways of looking at things, but normally end up with the same opinion.

You may have a best friend that you think you can share everything with and that knows ever thought in your head but believe me, a brother or sister has had that same though before you ever though it. In the end, friends come and go but a brother or sister are always there to stay.

How to celebrate – Visit your brother or sister if they are close, if not, write them a letter. (I know that’s old fashion) Take your brother or sister to lunch today. Do something to let your brother or sister know that you love them.
