October 14th National Dessert Day

Finally a day we can all really enjoy, National Dessert Day!!! Pig pout on your favorite dessert today, or favorite desserts. (No one said it had to be only one kind of dessert!) Naturally some desserts are better for you than others…. a bowl of unsweetened fruit is far better that a bowl of Milky Ways! But this is the day to allow yourself to have something sweet, just because. And we all need that. If we deny ourselves any luxury we will eventually become grumpy, maybe a bit more healthy, but very, very grumpy. So indulge, enjoy, and diet tomorrow!

How to celebrate – Enjoy your favorite dessert(s). List all your favorite desserts to make sure you don;t forget one. Sample some new desserts, who knows, maybe you’ll find a new one thast becomes your favorite!

July 12th Pecan Pie Day

One of my all time favorite desserts, Pecan Pie! It’s almost as American as Apple Pie, maybe even a little bit more because, after all, aren’t all American’s a little bit nuts! Well, whether nuts or not I’ll leave that up to you because today I can have some Pecan Pie! I wish I could say it was a healthy treat since it’s got nuts and all in it but is shares the same fate as Apple Pie because frankly, no pie is healthy but who cares…. it’s Pie!!! Here’s a recipe for pecan pie in case you want to make your own.

How to celebrate – Have some pecan pie. Learn about all the different types of pecan pie. Test your home made pie against a store bought one.

February 1st National Candy Making Day/Candy Decorating Day

February 1 National Candy Making Day

Nearly everyone likes some form of candy. It has been with us for as long as nearly anyone can remember. Apparently the first recorded Candy came in India somewhere before the 6th and 4th century BCE.  If you are able to remember beyond that then I apologize. But today is not about eating the candy, it’s about making it and sharing your recipes with others. Now don’t expect Mars or Hersey’s to share their recipes but as individuals we can share if for no other reason than to make someone’s day a little sweeter.

How to celebrate – Make some candy! Look over internet recipes sent in for candy. Throw a candy making party.

December 18th Bake Cookies Day

It seems like when ever holidays get close we start thinking about baking cookies. Christmas-cookies, birthdays-cookies, Valentines Day-cookies, Halloween-cookies, April Fool’s Day-cookies. Well, they don’t have to be good cookies for April Fool’s Day, in fact maybe if they were bad that could be your gag for April Fool’s Day, literally! It seems like we celebrate we like to have cookies around. So why shouldn’t we have a holiday about the things that make us feel good, like cookies!

How to celebrate – Bake some cookies. Eat some cookies. Make everyday a new holiday, no matter how bizarre!

October 17th Sweetest Day

Okay, so like we needed another excuse to eat more candy and sweets. Well, add the third Saturday in October as another reason to celebrate something sweet to eat. The day was created by Herbert Birch Kingston in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922. This day originally was created to get sweets to those who could not afford them but as with most well intended ideas, it found a life of its own. So it’s sort of a mini Valentine’s Day today with the exception that it includes all kinds of sweets, not just candy.

How to celebrate – Give something sweet to someone you love. Provide something sweet to those who cannot afford them. Make someones life sweeter.

October 1st National Homemade Cookie Day

Love cookies!?! Can’t get out to get them from the store!?! Well, make them yourself! There is nothing like the smell of baking cookies in the house except maybe taking a warm cookie coming out of the oven and dunking it in a glass of milk. Today is the day to make those cookies the whole family enjoys, or even if you just enjoy them yourself. You can choose the flavor, size and shape of the cookie, how much it is cooked and who gets them. Bake them from scratch, or from a package, it doesn’t really matter.

How to celebrate – Bake some cookies! Try to invent a new type of cookie. Try and name as many types of cookies as you can.

October 14th National Dessert Day

Well if you feel guilty about eating a dessert after a meal today is your day not to worry about it. In fact, today you should be eating that dessert because it National Dessert Day. Heck, maybe you can even forget the meal and just go directly to the dessert! and maybe, if you are like me, I feel a little guilty but I eat it anyway so does today give me the right to eat two desserts? And if you are one of those that doesn’t eat all your dinner because you want to save room for dessert, well today you don’t need to worry about it. Maybe you could have a healthy dessert lie some fresh fruit or something. Is carrot cake a healthy dessert? Even though the French make a ton of desserts, Americans are some of the most dessert concerned people in the world. Why are we concerned? Because we might miss out!

How to celebrate – Have a dessert today. If you normally have dessert anyway, have two today! Have dessert before your meal so you don’t have to leave room for it.

December 8th National Brownie Day

If you ever want to get the whole family in the same room at the same time, bake some brownies, they’ll soon be in the kitchen with you, unless of course you are baking hem elsewhere (Which might be a little odd). Hardly anyone can ignore the scent of a brownie. There is something about them that just call out to you, drawing you in closer and closer.

Generally thought of as a cold weather treat, a brownie is great anytime of the year. Of course, there is something about that warm chocolate all melted and gooey, surrounded by a cake like substance that nobody knows what it is, or cares.

Add a little ice cream and the day becomes even better. There is something about the blend of warm chocolate brownie and cold vanilla ice cream. You can have it with, or without, nuts. Walnuts, pecans, cashews, any type of nut you choose. You can even share it with someone who is nuts!

And if you really want to please Santa leave him a brownie instead of those old, stale cookies! Santa might stay a little longer and leave better presents! Add a dollop of whipped cream and even better! (What is a dollop exactly?)

You can even go wild if you want to. Add a candy cane all melted inside the brownie or M&M’s or a little brandy (For adults only) The point is, live it up a little! It’s your brownie so you can do what you want with it.

How to celebrate – Make some brownies today. Try some new additive to your brownie. Don’t forget the Alice B. Toklas brownies!
