March 19th Poultry Day

Well, if you like chickens or turkeys you may want to turn away from today.. unless, of course, you like to eat them in which case, today is your day! There is no doubt that chicken and turkey is better for you than beef or pork, maybe not quite as good as fish but acceptably close. The fact is, humans are meat eaters, not that I like it, but they are. You don;t have to eat meat, you can stick to a vegetarian diet, or vegan diet, but generally speaking (Not everyone) you will look like death warmed over! So enjoy, or don’t, poultry day it’s your choice.

How to celebrate – Cows would prefer you eat chicken. Eat healthy. Become a vegetarian.

Thanksgiving

Today is Thanksgiving. Most of us have a lot top be thankful for and we should remember those things today by celebrating with friends and family, those people who make our lives better than they would be otherwise. Thanksgiving was originally proclaimed by George Washington on October 3rd, 1789 to be held on November 26th. Since that day changed every year Abraham Lincoln set it on the fourth Thursday of November though it was still up to every state to make it official. Franklin D. Roosevelt made Thanksgiving an national holiday in 1941.

How to celebrate – Be thankful for all you have and the people around you. Try and make someone’s Thanksgiving special for those who do not have a bounty. Dress up like Pilgrims or Native Americans.

March 19th Poultry Day

Today we celebrate poultry. Why you may ask… heck if I know, I did not pick the day, name the day, or create the day. In fact, no one seems to know too much about it at all. Now I am sure someone will object to all that but I’m not going to chicken out, call me a turkey and maybe it is a foul subject. This day does not suggest we eat poultry, that we keep them for pets or even participate with them in any way. It is simply about poultry so make of it what you will. So why did the chicken cross the road? The more important question may be… who cares?

How to celebrate – How many different types of poultry can you name? Have chicken for dinner tonight. Cross the road and see if you find a chicken there.

January 5th National Bird Day

There are a number of bird days throughout the year but I believe this is the first one of the year. If you are a bird lover, you’ll love today. Of course, if you live in the more northern states you may have to wait a while to see one but here in the south they abound. From some of the most regal, as in the eagle to some of tiniest, as the hummingbird, birds wake us in the morning with their songs, making it a good start of the day. Whether you are a bird lover or not it’s easy to admire their grace and beauty. So spend a little time today looking up and spotting the birds around you and imagine what it must be like to soar above looking down on us all.

How to celebrate – See how many types of birds you can name. Put a feather in your cap. Put out food for the birds around you.

November 28th Thanksgiving

Today we celebrate all those things we are thankful for. Family, country, careers, friends… you name it, then be thankful for it. The first Thanksgiving was celebrate in 1621 and went on for three days. Of course, they didn’t have football games to watch back then or it might have lasted longer! It wasn’t until 1941 that Congress set the date for Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November. In the past, it has been celebrate in September or October before finally ending up in November. If you think about it, there really is a lot to be thankful for. We eat, drink and watch out favorite movies (Or football) on Thanksgiving Day, all the company of our loved ones and friends which is what it really is all about. The food is nice, the entertainment good but having our friends and family with us is everything.

How to celebrate – Make this Thanksgiving a special day for all. Know what you are thankful for. Dress up like a Pilgrim, or a Native American, or even a turkey.

September 7th National Salami Day

What is salami? Well, it’s sausage with spices added to it to add a little kick, or a lot of kick, depending on the spices you add. It goes great with bread, cheese and a little wine. So if you like pork and like sausage, you’ll probably like salami. In fact there are those I know that don’t like sausage but love salami. Go figure? Many are able to make a full meal out of salami, cheese, crackers, and whatever drink you prefer. It also makes a great snack and is perfect for those holiday parties as it can be a proper finger food. Oh and it can be made out of beef as well, and chicken, or turkey. Oh how the world progresses!

How to celebrate – Have some salami. Learn to make your own salami. Have a salami party.

March 19th National Poultry Day

Today we honor those birds and fowl that give their all for us, because we eat them. Chickens, turkeys and any form of bird that serves as a meal. Now before you get all upset and angry about our consumption of animals understand, we have to eat and like it or not, man is a carnivore.

Chicken is the most prevalent among the fowl we consume. There are those who do not like chicken, or any kind of fowl, but by far most adults and kids prefer chicken to any other kind of fowl served up.

Turkey is leaner and better for you, but not for the turkey. Today we have turkey everything, meant to make our meals better for us. Now I like turkey, but not so much turkey burgers and such. I know, I know, it’s better for you but I want my hamburgers made out of beef!

And then there is the Cornish hen. A little gamey for me but many like it. Most I have seen are very small. It might take a half dozen of them to fill you up.

And of course, there is the blackbird pie. Personally, I’ve never had one of these and don’t think I would try it even if it was served in front of me. But that’s what today is all about. Honoring those creatures that keep us full and give us the energy to eat all those nasty vegetables!

How to celebrate – Serve up something fowl for dinner! Don’t think too much about what you are eating. Watch out for salmonella.

January 5th National Bird Day

Today is National Bird Day, not to be confused with Bird Day celebrated on May 4th. Although the days are sort of the same thing they are different. On National Bird Day we celebrate those birds native to the United States. The day was probably created by the U.S. Pet Industry in an effort to sell more birds.

There are a lot of birds in the Untied States. Some actually fly! My personal favorite is the Cardinal but that’s because my favorite color is red. My bet is, that if you like a particular bird it;’s because of the birds color. Or maybe their song, or maybe some other reason only known to you.

I live in Florida so we are normally surrounded by birds year round. Most of the time it’s good, sometimes it’s a little noisy but you get use to it. Birds can be majestic like the Eagle or tiny like the mockingbird. Each state has a bird that is considered native to their state, several states claim the same type of bird as their own.

All you have to do is look up at the sky and admire the birds over head. (Just keep your mouth closed as you look up) Also, from personal experience, if you have one of the various birds you can teach words to do not, I repeat do not, teach to say… “Here kitty kitty”.

National-Dance-Like-a-Chicken-Day

It’s interesting to think that Benjamin Franklin wanted the national bird to be the turkey instead of the eagle. What was he thinking!?! My best guess is that he was thinking about lunch.

How to celebrate – Learn your state bird. Get a bird for a pet. Learn to do the chicken dance.

November 21st National Stuffing Day

Today is National Stuffing Day. The day to decide whether you fix your stuffing inside the turkey or outside the turkey.

To make traditional stuffing or something out of a box.

Or follow some recipe that sounds good to you created by a famous chef. Now I understand this is the true meaning of stuffing day but I feel it should be – THREE STAGE STUFFING DAY – instead.

STAGE ONE

The first being the traditional fixing of the stuffing as first written down in a Roman cookbook, “De Re Coquinaria” in early Italy. But there are two other stuffings that should go along with “Stuffing Day”.

STAGE TWO

Stage two is stuffing yourself at the Thanksgiving Day table until you are nearly ready to explode. Even if you don’t eat the stuffing you’ll be stuffed, and isn’t that what Thanksgiving Day is all about?

cute-sleeping-black-lab-arm-chair

STAGE THREE

Stage three is all about sitting in front of the television watching football, whether you like football or not, in your OVER-STUFFED chair. Of course, sleep is soon to follow whether the game is exciting or not!

So, I call for the THREE STAGE STUFFING DAY – Stuffing the turkey, stuffing yourself, and relaxing in your over-stuffed chair!

How to celebrate – Get stuffed in any of three ways you choose, or better yet… all three!
