August 29th International Bat Night

“Eurobats” created International Bat Night in 1977 to help create an awareness of bats and dispel the myths about them. Bats can live up to 30 years, but they can barely see their prey using “Echolocation” to guide them through the dark caves, belfries and other places they can hide in. Most bats are small, but the “Flying Fox’ bat can have up to a 6-foot wingspan. Though the vampire movies make bats out to be an evil creature they normally try to avoid humans where possible.

How to celebrate – Don’t be afraid of bats. If you have a mosquito problem, put some bats in your yard. Use bat guano in your gardens.

August 29th International Bat Night

Okay, so here comes a mouth full… tonight is celebrated on the last Saturday night in August that leads into a Sunday morning in August. You need a day just to celebrate remembering that one! Anyway, it was created in 1997 by EUROBATS to educate people about the good bats provide. There are over 1,100 species of bats, and they can live up to 30 years. They eat up to 1,100 mosquitoes in an hour and of course bat guano is among the best fertilizers you can buy. Yes, they are a little creepy and naturally anyone of them could be Count Dracula but beyond that, bats are pretty cool.

May 22nd World Goth Day

This is one of the darkest days of the year, literally! To me, Goth is nothing new, it’s revisiting the days of the vampire. Wearing black, or dark, clothing, being a pale as you can make yourself, using skeletons as adornments. It’s like having Halloween everyday! I do sort of like the steampunk side of it thought. It mixes the old with the new in fashion which can be kinda cool. I think the general idea of being Goth is being sad and letting everyone know it. Good, bad or indifferent, you are what you represent. If you are generally miserable I think Goth may be the thing for you. Though most of us spend our time trying to find happiness, if your thing is looking for sadness, well… go for it.

How to celebrate – Check out the Goth fashions. Pretend to be a vampire. Go Steampunk for the day.
