May 19th World Plant A Vegetable Garden Day

There is nothing like the joy of gathering in your first vegetable you planted and serving it for dinner, or as a snack. The idea that you grew it, raised it and helped it grow into something useful for you and your family is something extremely rewarding. Now multiply that by growing an entire garden filled with every type of vegetable you like, and maybe even a few you don’t care for. The reward is high. Today was created by Bob Matthews of Rochester, NY in 2019.

How to celebrate – Plant your own vegetable garden. Learn when you harvest your vegetables. Start a vegetable growing garden club.

November 14th National Pickle Day

Today isn’t so much about the pickle as it is about pickling, the act of turning say a cucumber into what we think of as a pickle! Pickling is the act of soaking vegetables into a brine flavored with herbs and spices to save it for later use. Pickling has been around since at least 2,400 BC in India and not limited to cucumbers only but including nearly every vegetable ever grown. However, cucumbers are what we commonly think of as pickles and are enjoyed in numerous different fashions and styles. Today has been celebrated since 1949.

How to celebrate – Name as many pickles as you can. Learn how to pickle your own vegetables. See how many different things you can pickle.

June 17th Eat Your Vegetables Day

It is very practical that “Eat Your Vegetables Day” fall nearly dead center of Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month. Remember back when you were a child and you hated your vegetables? Well now as am adult it’s somewhat surprising how many of those vegetables we like. It’s also surprising how many we still won’t even try because of our childhood impressions. Clearly vegetables are good for you. They provide nearly everything we need in our diet, help us to keep our weight down and help us to maintain energy.

Hoe to celebrate – Eat your veggies! Try some vegetables you wouldn’t evenm taste as a child. Learn different ways to make your veggies more palatable.

May 19th World Plant A Vegetable Garden Day

People have been planting gardens since we realized we could grow our own food perhaps millions of years ago. (At least thousands of years ago) And every years we spend small fortune growing tomatoes and peppers and various other colorful vegetables, probably spending more on fertilizer and gardening tools than we save by buying our vegetables from the grocery store. They do taste better, are fresher and give us the satisfaction that we have accomplished something. Today was started by Bob Matthews in 2019, not all that long ago, from Rochester, New York an author and gardener. Today was picked because it generally clears all of North America from it’s last frost date of the spring.

How to celebrate – Plant a vegetable garden. Add some fruit to your vegetables. Enjoy the hobby more than the actual harvesting of food.

June 20th National Smoothie Day

June 20th National Smoothie Day

I don’t really know how long smoothies have been around. It seems like forever but I don’t think Wild Bill Hickock was enjoying a smoothie on his buffalo hunts. Smoothies are a healthy drink, normally. They contain vitamins and minerals that we might not digest daily otherwise. We can sip on them or gulp them down (brain freeze warning!) and it doesn’t matter. We are satisfying our taste buds while getting those healthy boosts at the same time. That’s a win-win.

How to celebrate – Have a smoothie today. Make up your own new smoothie. Buy a blender.

June 17th Eat Your Vegetables Day

It is only appropriate that since yesterday was learning all about fresh vegetables today should be the day we eat those vegetables! We know vegetables are healthier than most of the things we eat and therefore better for us. In fact, the more vegetables we eat at a meal the less of other things we eat and therefore we are eating healthier. Naturally that doesn’t include all the salt, sauces and cheese we add to the vegetables where we pretend we are eating healthier. Many of our tasted are acquired. If our parents didn’t like certain vegetables we won’t like them either. However, as we age our tastes change and we expand those things we eat. So try a few vegetables you never had as a child, who knows… you just might like them.

How to celebrate – Eat your veggies. Prepare more vegetables for your meals. Try vegetables you’ve never tried before.

June 16th Fresh Veggies Day

Veggies are so good for you; normally fun to eat, and usually plentiful. The fresher they are the better they taste, the prettier they are to look at, and the better they smell when cooking. If they come from your own garden, all the better! A salad offering fresh vegetables is often a beautiful thing to see. The green, red, orange, and yellow colors offer a plate full of rainbows. Being summer, most vegetables are available. If you want them all year long you may want to take up canning while you can. Vegetables are art in its natural form, and they are good for you as well. That’s a win-win. If you don’t have your own garden there are plenty of you-pick farms and co-op gardens available.

How to celebrate – See how many vegetables to can name. (remembering vegetables such as tomatoes are actually considered a fruit). Start your own garden. Include fresh vegetables in all your meals.

May 19th World Plant A Vegetable Garden Day

There are few things as rewarding as planting a garden and watching it grow. It’s sort of like having a child, except it grows faster and can’t give you hugs. There is just something about the feeling you get from watching a garden grow and you can actually reap rewards by eating what you grow and sharing it with others too. So you plant your garden hoping something will grow and then getting excited when those first few signs of life pop to the surface. We normally take pictures so we can share the growth with others, we feed it, water it and prune it… protect it bugs and animals and then… you eat it. There is something odd in all that. the day was created by Bob Matthews in 2019 of Rochester, NY.

How to celebrate – Plant your garden. Take pictures of your garden. Reap the rewards of your work.

October 20th Brandied Fruit Day

Today is your opportunity to eat some healthy fruit and get buzzed at the same time! Sound like a winner, well it is! Now it takes a little prep work though. You need to soak your fruit in brandy until it’s reached the desired amount of brandy (This may vary per person) Then add a little sugar, if you want, and let it dry (Or don’t) and enjoy. Now if you like, you can even skip the fruit part and just drink the brandy, but it will leave you hungry so I suggest the fruit. And if you are health aware… skip the brandy and just eat the fruit. But if you do either of those you won’t enjoy the day as it is meant, and it is meant for enjoying! You will need to monitor your intake.

How to celebrate – Brandy some fruit. Take a risk and brandy some vegetables. Taste test.

June 17th Eat Your Vegetables Day

You say potato, I say mashed! Today we celebrate the idea of eating all the vegetables on your plate, maybe even forgoing the meat to have nothing but vegetables. They can actually be quite good and are healthier too! Red, green, yellow nearly all the colors of the rainbow. And if you don’t like the flavor you can always cover them in cheese or bacon! Corn, beans, potatoes, squash, okra, broccoli, cauliflower, egg plant, peppers… they are all great! They give you more energy and might even help you lose a little weight! (That is if you don’t cover them in cheese or wrap them in bacon) And you know what makes them taste the absolute best? Grow them yourself, it’s easier than growing a cow.

How to celebrate – Eat some vegetables. Grow some vegetables. At least have a salad.
