The idea of the United Nations comes out of the League of Nations which the United States proposed but did not join. The world was happy when the United States did join the UN because they knew the US would pay nearly all the bills for the UN. The idea of the UN is to help provide peace, get those in need whatever they needed and to keep everybody calm. They do a wonderful job of keeping themselves calm, not so much the rest of the world though. They do serve a great job of trying to lend aid just not such a good job of letting those nations keep the aid they provide. Well at least they try, or sort of anyway.
How to celebrate – Visit the UN, in the United States. Check the budget, most of which the US pays. Take a guess who gets the least from the UN?
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all forgive each other of the things we’ve done wrong? I mean, even countries can be forgiven simply because it’s the people in the country, not the country itself… and then far too often it’s one person in that country that starts everything the rest of the world hates. Today is known both as “Global Forgiveness Day” and “World Forgiveness Day” and it was started back in 1994 by the Christian Embassy of Christ’s Ambassadors in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. A world without hate, what a novel concept.
How to celebrate – Find something to like about every country instead of something to hate. Forgive what people have done in the past, they can’t change it and neither can you. Live and let live.
Today we celebrate the rainforests of the world, begun by “The Rainforest Partnership” in Austin, Texas in 2017. Rainforest are important for all sorts of reasons. For humans it provides 20% of thew oxygen we breathe and gets ride of carbon dioxide as it stabilizes climates all over the face of the earth. It is home to half of the plant life found in the world and half of the animals on earth. While we think of rainforests as a tropical environment did you know that their are rainforest as far north as Alaska and Vancouver Island, Canada? In fact the photo in this blog is of Vancouver Island. We are losing our rainforests at an alarming rate to greed when is possible to get the wood we need from other sources and can build our homes in other places.
How to celebrate – Visit a rainforest. Help protect the rainforests. Live and let live.
May 1st Global Love Day
All you need is love, or so say the Beatles. The idea behind Global Love Day is that we should all love our neighbors, whether they are next door or halfway around the world. It is humanity we are talking about here. The idea is nice, whether we are ever able to accomplish this feat or not remains to be seen. The day’s creator, Harold Becker created the day in 2004. Love comes from understanding and accepting cultures… and from never having to say you’re sorry! It’s interesting that the love of one’s own culture and the lack of respect for another’s is generally what brings about war.
How to celebrate – Love everybody! Treat others as you would have them treat you. Learn about other cultures.
March 28th Earth Hour
Today is designed to recognize what we are doing to our planet and how we need to take of it. It celebrates the World Wide Fund For Nature and requires we all turn off all non-essential electrically operated items from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Of course the times will vary with where you live but the idea is clear. For an hour you can do without your computer, television and any other electrical item you are using. It’s just an hour so I think we can all suffer through that.
How to celebrate – Do what you can to save the environment. Observe the hour of not using your electrical items. Cherish the earth, it’s the only one we’ve got.
There are so many things in this world that I am grateful for. And while so many of us know this, we often do not take the time to think about them. Well today is a day to reflect on just what makes us happy and that we are grateful has come to be.
The United Nation’s Mediation Group created today in 1965, during the cold war era. In a world where we seem to always look for the worst life offers, there are things we can truly be grateful for. Even if it is a simple as the sun rising every day. We can be grateful for our families, our friends and our pets… for they are all God sent… we did nothing to deserve them or earn them, they just came to be.
There are so many things we just take for granted, expecting that they will always be there. They may not be, and we need to appreciate them while we have them before they disappear on us. I hear so many people complain about the way the world is, but it is what we have helped to make it. And it’s not like there is any other place to go.
And we do get tired of people, but without them this would be a very lonely place. Imagine yourself totally alone in the world. No services, no friends, no love… just existence. To truly understand, we need a day like today where we actually examine those things we are grateful for, things provided for us that we did not have to provide for ourselves.
Because when you truly look at it, there is a lot to grateful for, those things that we just accept and believe to be a part of everyday life. Those people that surround us making our days better and all those who came before us who got us where we are. No, it’s not perfect, but then…. neither we are we.
How to celebrate – Show someone you are grateful to them today. Make up you own award for someone you are grateful to. Thank God for giving us another day on this imperfect earth.
